Caregiver Perspective

Caregiver Perspective I interviewed my lovely cousin, Annie Le, for her experience as a caregiver. Annie is currently in her last year of medical school and in the process of interviewing for residency. She has been working in her rotation for four weeks straight, so I am very grateful Annie agreed to an interview. Our total dependent grandma resided with Annie’s family; therefore, Annie had a role in taking care of my grandma. My grandma required total assistance during bathing, toileting, and feeding. My aunt, who was previously a nurse in Vietnam, was the main caregiver for my grandma. Annie would help with actions that require more than one individual, such as transfers. She also watched my grandma while my aunt was out of the house. Having a caregiver responsibility sparked curiosity in working with the elderly. Due to her interest in the older population, Annie volunteered in hospice care during her first year of medical school. The interview is focused on Annie’s experience in the field, barriers she faces, and her feelings towards the elderly …show more content…
Annie states her role is to serve these individuals and take care of them. More specifically, Annie’s role is to check the state of the individual and formulate a plan. She tries to be client-centered in the process. For instance, some religious patients will request for prayer, and Annie will pray with these individuals after the session. Annie believes her introverted personality and leadership skills allow her to be a good caregiver. She is a great listener and gives an opportunity for the elderly to speak. When it is Annie’s turn to talk, she can “get on their level”. Being able to relate to patients is another example of how Annie is client-centered in her sessions. In addition, Annie views herself as a leader. She can give directions and sense the individual’s best learning

Since becoming the Senior Social Worker / Acting Caregiver Support Coordinator, I have provided feedback and recommendations that have directly influenced the program’s policies and procedures. For example, when I began working with the program in May 2015, Veterans and their Caregivers had 6 months to appeal the outcome of their assessment for the Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers Programs. Working collaboratively with other program staff, we immediately recognized the length of time needed to be shortened. After agreeing on 45 days to appeal, we discussed these changes with our supervisor, and began implementing this change and communicating it to applicants and program participants. As a result, the appeals are received in a…

Likewise, they emphasized that African American informal elder caregivers who participated in their focus groups, reported when in hospital settings, they felt ignored by the hospital staff, which included doctors, nurses, and social workers, who left them out of discussions regarding their older care recipients, and they consistently found it difficult to get their questions answered according to Reinhard and Choula (2012).
