Career Topic Research Paper: Pediatrics The reason I chose Pediatrics was because growing up I watched my mom at a job she loves. As I began to witness and understand the career she was in I started to slowly fall in love with it. I’ve always wanted a career that makes a difference, I started from taking care of baby kittens to one day wanting to nurture children that aren’t my own. I love being in the environment that my mom constantly works in. Although there are difficult situations she is put in at the end of the day you must see and notice the good. This type of physician is mainly certified for children, they provide care for infants, children, teenagers, and even young adults. They specialize in treating illnesses, minor injuries, infectious diseases, and give vaccinations. Pediatrics range all over from nursing, to surgery, to being a pediatric doctor. Pediatricians work full time normally averaging 50 hours or more in a week. They can be found in private practices, clinics, hospitals, or group practices. When becoming a pediatric doctor, you must know how much school is ahead. You have your 4 years of undergraduate school, 4 years of graduate school which consist of 2 years of labs and classrooms and the next 2 years filled with clinical rotations and job shadowing. You then have 2 years of residency which is where you will choose a specialty and that normally takes another 2 years to receive. In 2014 the number of jobs in the us for Pediatricians was 708,300. The medical field is one of the only fields that are almost always hiring due to the progress in treatments and technology. The pay for pediatrics range from $140,000 starting off to the highest being somewhere around $250,000. Earning around $104 to $120 an hour. Missouri is one of the highest paying states. What I found was that the highest paid pediatrician in Missouri are getting paid around $217,520 earning $104.58 an hour. Although the pay sounds fantastic you must consider how much student debt is going to be racked up. The average amount of student loans for a student after all 10 years of college is $166,750 which will take over 30 years to pay
