In high school, I began volunteering at an elementary school because of the honor societies that I was a part of. I enjoyed it so much that I continued volunteering following high school. It opened my eyes to how different inabilities affect a child’s learning. Some had learning impairments where they needed additional help with reading, writing or math that I assisted with. Some had difficulties with fine motor skills like the tripod grasp, holding scissors properly, tying laces or using buttons. Others had difficulties concentrating and staying on task. Working with these children allowed me to use my patience, compassion and playfulness. I effectively connected with them by making our time together fun and engaging. It is my hope that I will have this same impact on patients in my future career, knowing how to treat patients with the same or similar difficulties.
I truly believe my studies, observation, volunteer, professional experiences and personal story demonstrate why I am an excellent candidate to pursue graduate studies at your institution.
