The Mississippi College and Career Readiness standards are used in every lesson plan that the teachers at Petal Primary Elementary school use. When discussing what type of curriculum Petal Primary uses, I learned that the kindergarten teachers use the College and Career Readiness Standards and Mississippi Department of Education Literacy standards. There is one main lead instructor in their PLC group meetings that creates the continuum curriculum. During these PLC meetings, the teacher’s use ELA professional development and unpack the standards. This includes big ideas, verbs, essential questions, and assessment strategies. My mentor teacher is confident about the PLC meetings that provide an overview of the standards and ensured me that this covers utmost what students need to learn.

When working on my unit plan for Mrs. Stephens class I learned that I could not come up with a lesson without viewing and implementing what standards I needed to use. Without the standards my lesson would have no purpose and my future students would be off track in their progress. My mentor teacher reminded me how vital it is to follow the standards because if you do not your students could fall behind tremendously while other students are progressing like they should be. Lesson plans are not lesson plans without the standards.
Overall, I have learned how vital the standards are in the classroom. Without the correct standards children will not get every vital skill needed to progress to the next grade. Not only will they not progress, they will not be prepared for college or the “real” world. These standards prepare our students to learn to perform in Mississippi and globally. Implementing backwards lesson planning, active engagement, and the correct standards will set every student up for

In July 1991 an article swept the pages of Reason magazine. The author Jerry Jesness, a former public school teacher, discussed how “the floating standard” is inescapable and how it is destroying our Nation’s public education. Teachers who fail to support this standard are seen as setting their students up to be unsuccessful and in a way are being punished if they do so. So teachers pass their students and if the student can’t reach that standard the standard is lowered. Jessness states that “The floating standard makes everyone a winner.…

During POC #1, I learned through the Focus 2 Career Assessment that I am almost ready to become a nurse. In order for me to become a nurse, I need to become a more social person, either that or fake it! By taking the Focus 2 Carer Assessment, I easily learned a valuable lesson about becoming a nurse, and how I should take my personality into consideration while becoming a nurse. Because I am determined to become a nurse, I am willing to become a more social person; but if I were not willing to become more social, Focus 2 claimed that I would excel quite well in many different types of jobs.…

Throughout this course I have gained knowledge about myself as an educator and how to create an effective literacy classroom. My literacy philosophy, literacy instruction topics, insights into literacy instruction and research and the seven pillars of literacy development are all important aspects of what I have learned and will apply to my classroom A teaching philosophy is an important base to every classroom, having specific components of my teaching philosophy that related to literacy helps keep my classroom organized and focused when it comes to literacy instruction. One key aspect of my literacy philosophy is exposure to various forms of literature, I feel that the more you expose students to literature, and the more varieties if literature made available to them, the more likely they are to have a natural desire to read and write on their own. Another component I find important is applying literacy instruction to every day real world contexts.…
