Why is it important to prepare a plan? I guess that would depend on what type of plan is needed. Imagine a house built without a house plan, or attempting to put together a cabinet without a set of directions. The end results would be disastrous and likely not usable. The same applies to a career plan. Without one in place, it is more difficult to reach goals or fulfill dreams. With a career plan in place, there are strategic steps put in place that must be followed in order to attain goals. Consequently, goals are broken into short-term and long-term goals. Short term goals are those that can be achieved in five years or less while long-term goals are those that take longer than five years. Consequently, as a director, the duties include planning and implementing the overall policies, procedures, and services of the cardiac catheterization lab. A cardiac cath lab director ensures efficient and effective lab operations, including quality control and compliance adherence. The director must be familiar with a variety of the field 's concepts, practices, and procedures and relies on extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Leads and directs the work of others ("Cardiac Catheter Director Roles," 2016, p. 5). To obtain this position, I must acquire management experience. Fulfilling my job as a clinical coordinator for three years will help me gain the management skills needed to apply for a director position. As a director, it is important to know how to operate the cath lab. Furthermore, I would need to learn the positions that registered nurses hold in the lab, which is circulation nurse and monitoring tech. Critical care nursing (CCRN) and moderate sedation certifications are required to work in the lab. It is essential to a cardiac cath lab director to learn how to run the lab in case of an emergency or when another nurse is ill.
Everyone knows that career plans do not always happen as expected, and there are many reasons why. Oftentimes, a career plan is made at a young age and a person’s priority may change as they mature. Some people simply lose focus of their goals and never return to them, while others change their minds and find something more enticing. It has been suggested that it is sometimes easier to pick a goal you want to achieve in five years and work from that goal backward.
