I am interested in pursuing a degree in Elementary Education. Up until senior year, I thought I wanted to be a civil engineer. My experience as a nanny and many volunteer activities led me search for careers involving children. School-to-Work introduced me to a career path that interested me. My teacher recommended a class called Children’s Literature. During this class I received about 40 practicum hours. This helped confirm my interest in education. My mom wanted to be a teacher, but her dad discouraged it because he said they didn’t make a lot of money. My mom taught me to not let anyone influence my decision because it is more about what makes you happy than the money. I have found this to be true many times in my life and I am thankful to have a mom who gives such great advice. I have been on the Honor Roll during all of high school and have been a member of National Honor Society since junior year.

I have volunteered at “What’s Cookin’”, hosted by the Waukee Area Chamber of Commerce, as well as the 24 Hour Sew-a-Thon. These were two of the most rewarding and fun events I have volunteered at. The 24 Hour Sew-a-Thon took place at the Meredith building, downtown. All of the materials needed to make a pillowcase were provided. I invited two friends. All three of us make around 20 pillowcases each! These pillowcases were donated to charities around central Iowa. Blank Children’s Hospital and Women and Children’s shelters were just a few of the organizations the pillowcases were donated to. I also volunteer to watch children during the PTO meetings at various Waukee schools. I took part in Pal P.E. during my junior year. This class pairs Waukee students with special needs students and together, they participate in activities altered to fit their needs. Lastly, I am a weekly volunteer for Big Brothers Big
