Career Interview Analysis: Former TRiO Educational Talent Search Student
Background

The student I interviewed is a current second-year student at West Los Angeles College, studying computer science and engineering. Previously, he attended Susan Miller Dorsey High School and was a participant of the West Los Angeles College TRiO Educational Talent Search (ETS) program, which assists low-income/first-generation students with college and financial aid. Because serving low-income/first-generation students in outreach programs is what I currently want to do, I thought that Luis would be a good person to interview, since he was a product of the ETS program and is no longer in high school. In my interview with Luis, we went through each of the headings

While at Ross, he enjoyed the opportunity to meet coworkers and customers, but he disliked how much work it was for so little pay. Working for the TRiO Talent Search program provides him satisfaction, because he feels like he is giving back to the community. He mentioned that he feels that he is volunteering his time to help students further their education, but that he is actually getting paid for it. He mentioned no dislikes of working with the program. Working in construction was interesting for Luis in that he stated that it is amazing how things are built and that he often feels that others take construction workers for granted. He said that construction is innovative and a process, but that it gets overwhelming because of the hard labor. In having Luis reflect about his previous jobs, he was able to imagine where he wants to be in the future. In five years, Luis hopes to see himself graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and Engineering (or Civil Engineering) from the University of California, Santa Cruz or Merced. In 10 years, Luis hopes to be settled into a job in computer science working in networking and security for one of the companies mentioned previously. He also hopes to be in the process of buying a home and being able travel when he wants …show more content…
Luis mentioned that his current occupation as a tutor for TRiO ETS is very satisfying. In fact, he mentioned that he finds no downsides to this job whatsoever. While Luis hopes to obtain a job in a technology-related field, Happenstance Theory can explain how this job opportunity has created a positive experience for Luis (Zunker, 2016). While Luis planned on seeking opportunities related to technology, he was able to find another interest through this program. This is important, according to Happenstance Theory, because the “client is viewed as one who is exploring and experimenting and should be empowered to take actions that help to create a satisfying life” (Zunker, 2016, p. 37). Essentially, by taking the opportunity to explore a career field other than technology, Luis has been able to broaden his skills, as well as find an interest that might be of benefit to him in the future. If he ever decided that working for a technology company was not for him, perhaps in the future, he could work with students in a technology-related

To answer the above questions, this study will utilize a case study design under qualitative method. The emphasis of how individuals perceive, believe, and perform or behave is more practical and accurate when such individuals share their experiences in a case study (Baxter et al., 2012) and hence the choice of this design. I plan to develop between 6-10 semistructured open ended interview questions. These questions will be used to seek answers from selected nursing leadership, hospital leaders and some nursing staff. Each interview will be 10-15 minutes in length.…

Development- chances are everyone knows at least something about it. Mainly because it is constantly occurring around each and every one of us. Barbara Miller defines development as change that is directed towards the improvement of human welfare (Miller, B., 2013). Yet, not everyone views development in the same context. In fact, when two interviewees, both from the Dickinson College community but with different backgrounds, were asked about what development meant to them, the results showed a collection of similar and conflicting views.…

Semi-structured interviewing is guided only in the sense that some form of interview guide, such as the matrix described below is prepared beforehand, and provides a framework for the interview. The majority of questions are created during the interview, allowing both the interviewer and the person being interviewed the flexibility to probe for details or discuss issues. Less intrusive to those being interviewed as the semi-structured interview encourages two-way communication. Those being interviewed can ask questions of the interviewer. Confirms what is already known but also provides the opportunity for learning.…

John Krumboltz’s Happenstance Learning Theory discusses that human behavior is the result of different learning experiences made available by both planned and unplanned situations in which human beings find themselves. Since no one can know in advance the destiny or outcome of an individual’s decision, Krumboltz used the Happenstance Learning Theory as an attempt to explain why individuals follow certain career paths in life and how counselors can use this theory to guide their clients through this process. The Happenstance theory explains that every situation (planned or unplanned) is a potential opportunity for someone, as long as they are open and willing to capitalize on these moments. In my own life, I can look back and see where Happenstance…
