Five years ago, the young and practical version of myself saw higher education as an abstract dream. I knew where I stood in society’s system as an undocumented student, and as a first-generation, low-income student. Thus, my commitment to working in the education sector is the result of my personal, academic, and professional journey. My career goal is to establish an organization that will break those barriers for students from disadvantaged socioeconomic and sociopolitical communities. As a current student at New York University and based upon my interactions with faculty at Steinhardt, I know that the International Education program at NYU will provide me with the intellectual and practical skills needed to embark on the path that I have set out for myself. Before synthesizing the impetus for my interest in NYU, I would like to expand on the academic and personal experiences that served as the foundation for my fascination in education, which has become greater than a career goal in my life.
As a Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival student and a first-generation, low-income student, I had an 8 % and 11% chance, respectively, of graduating college. These statistics expose the harsh reality faced by youth in
