Career Fair Experience

Attending the NCSU Engineering Career Fair as a freshman was initially an intimidating experience, but as I got more comfortable in the environment I was able to receive valuable feedback. I talked to multiple companies (generally, the ones that were the least busy) and had them answer some questions that I have generated prior to attending. Because I realize that I do not have many of the qualifications necessary to land an internship, I used my time to learn about what the companies seek in an employee in order to help me make the most of my years of undergraduate education.
The first company I talked to was Sageworks, which is a private, local software company that provides financial analysis. They placed a high value on internships, which I found to be a recurring theme in essentially every company’s priorities. Sageworks specifically noted that they “do not have time to train an employee from 0 experience,” therefore they expect the employee to be able to jump right in. Co-ops are weighted similarly to internships. I also asked them about the significance of a minor, to which they replied that minors show initiative, and the “most successful students

This company was seeking a very specifically trained applicant with training in linux and the “right technology.” They stated that, honestly, their employees mostly sit in front of a computer, but skills in communication really set individuals apart as those skills are unusual in their line of work (their implications, not mine). Once again, co-ops and internships held about the same value. A minor was not very important, only if it was something an individual was interested in. As for a masters degree, it was a positive component of a resume. However, they also noted that in this day many times a company will pay their employees to go back to school, so it is not

I first started looking for a summer internship during the spring 2015 school semester. I used various outlets and applied to many jobs in Long Island, NY and in Albany, NY. I found that using career websites, such as CareerSaint or Indeed.com, did not result in me finding much because I would send out my resume, and not really know who my resume went to so I could not follow up with the company if I wanted to. So, I started researching online, mainly using search engines such as Google.com, companies that I thought would be a good fit for me. My major is Actuarial Science, however I am still looking at working in different areas in business in order to find something that I really enjoy doing and can see myself doing as a career for the rest of my life.…

College to Career: A recent survey commissioned by Bentley University in 2014 found that “compared with business decision-makers and corporate recruiters, high school and college students were far less likely to define preparedness in terms of personal traits or work ethic” (Chase, 2015). This means skills and experience rank high for college students when they evaluate preparedness. Unfortunately, the same survey found “thirty-seven percent of recent college graduates give themselves a grade of “C” or lower on their individual level of preparedness” (Chase, 2015).…

Intern Nation by author Ross Perlin analyzes the current state of internships in astoundingly immensedetail. In specific, Perlin focuses on the variety of internships, including “the good, the bad, and the ugly; the paid and the unpaid; the ostensibly academic and the completely untethered; part-time internships lasting a few weeks and full-time ones last a year” (XVI). These elements are described through first-hand accounts; for example, the interns at Disney World and the government interns on Capitol Hills. These elements are also described through in-depth investigation; for example, the 18 percent of interns who work without pay or the evidence of companies and government organizations firing full-time paid staff and replacing them with…

Prior to the UNI Career Fair, I did some research on the University website to try to figure out which booths I was interested in visiting. The Lutheran Services in Iowa booth wasn’t one that was particularly on my list. This company is a non-profit organization that helps people who are struggling to parent children with behavioral or mental health issues. I wasn’t exactly sure what Lutheran Services In Iowa was all about until I walked past their station, and saw words on a poster saying “help children” and “family focus”.…

This report requested by Michele Bartosek pertains to the Alpha Kappa Psi Career Fair, hosted at Central Michigan University (CMU). While attending my first CMU career fair, I was not actively seeking an internship, but rather gaining experience and building my network. When I walked into Finch Fieldhouse, I did not expect there to be 143 tables worth of future employers, all squeezed into one gym. Although the Alpha Kappa Psi career fair was extremely overwhelming and stressful, it was beneficial to go as a freshman to understand what I can improve on at the next career fair. I understand the importance of many potential employers attending this event at this venue to maximize the opportunity for the students, however having so many people…

ACES Career Fair Reflection I was amazed as I walked into the ACES Career Fair. I knew there would be a lot of businesses at this event, but I was not able to quantify just how many until I walked around. Since I grew up on a grain farm, I have been familiar with many of these companies surrounding me, such as John Deere, AgriGold, and Pioneer. However, before the career fair, I still researched what companies would be present on Handshake, and I formulated a plan to speak with AgriGold, DuPont Pioneer, Growmark, and Farm Business Farm Management (FBFM). Once I made this decision, I wrote down the tasks associated each internship position a company offered.…

The Fall 2016 Career Fair at Kennesaw State University was a very overwhelming yet informative experience. The amount of career paths available to students in the major of psychology is astonishing. I visited many booths at the career fair, all of which had something to do with psychology. I also got 3 signatures from various companies after discussing career opportunities with a representative. The signatures I got were from Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Top Golf, and RADCO Residential.…
