Since a young age, the question, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” was constantly thrown at me, forcing it to be a topic of importance even in my childhood. Growing up, I had extreme care for others; whatever I put my mind to, I was sure to complete with great passion. While narrowing down what career path I wanted to pursue, I was certain I wanted to pick something in the medical field, hoping to positively touch and change the lives of many. Being an optometrist who mainly practiced developmental optometry and children’s eye care, he was good at making you feel at home even while you were in his examination chair. The doctor always made sure I felt comfortable before starting the exam, making sure to tell me what he was doing each step of the way. He was a very caring and welcoming doctor, and just by a couple of steps into his office, you could tell he put extra effort into guaranteeing that his patients were comfortable coming to see him. I never felt any fear or anxiety going to visit the optometrist because it was always a very friendly and happy place, but I was also always eager to see how my eyesight was developing. I attended the Global Medical Brigades trip to Nicaragua in 2014 and received the opportunity to aid in providing relief to numerous less fortunate children. I have used my opportunities to volunteer and shadow various medical professionals, including optometrists, to encourage and aid in opening my eyes to what I hope to pursue as my career. I am also the president of Be the Match, a nation wide bone marrow organization started by my brother at Oakland University. This organization has helped me learn a great deal about how the medical field as a whole affects people’s lives. Being president of this organization has taught me leadership skills that I do not believe everyone gets the chance to develop. Having the ability to motivate and keep everyone on the board passionate about working towards getting people to sign up as bone marrow donors was upon one of the toughest responsibilities for me to

Since my second semester at UT, I have devoted 15 hours a week to volunteering as a Young Life leader. Every week I help run a club meeting for dozens of high school kids, manage a planning meeting with my teammates, and lead a small group for sophomore girls. I spend hours at St. Stephen’s Episcopal School watching games and performances, and simply getting to know these young adults. Through investing this time to build relationships as a mentor and role model, I strove to show these girls that they are significant, noticed and valued. Volunteering as a Young Life leader has taught me invaluable lessons in building relationships, caring for others, and working with a team that will help me to be a more supportive and productive physician…
