Career Essay: A Career As An Athletic Director

There are several useful tools that any athletic director should have at their disposal. One of the most important tools to have for an athletic director is having a long and dependable list of contacts at their disposal. I have not personally gotten to know many individuals before I came to college. During my lower grade levels, I was stuck at home most of the time, and my extracurricular involvement was minimal. When I came to college, I began to become the social person who wanted to interact and get to know every person I talk to. Therefore, during the course of my undergraduate career, I met several people who would be influential in helping me a dependable list of contacts for when I become an athletic director.

Chris, has more than 20 years of experience in the athletic training field at multiple different levels. Due to my major being athletic training, I was fortunate enough to get to know Chris and we have become good friends.
The final person on this short list, is the athletic director and head women’s basketball coach at Eureka College, and his name is Steve. Steve came to Eureka during the middle of my junior year. Through my athletic training/kinesiology courses, as well as my athletic training practicums, I was able to talk to Steve and slowly build a work relationship with him. I have not gotten the chance to stop in and see him in a few months, but I was able to ask him questions on multiple occasions about what it takes to be an athletic director, as well as how he broke into the field.
While this list still has room for growth, I trust these four individuals to guide me through the beginning steps of becoming a successful athletic director. All of these people, perhaps besides Jim, would also be able to introduce me to other individuals in our field. I will continue to build these four relationships, I will “believe and act in partnership” (n.d.) with them by including them and my dreams, while also working with them on whatever needs they might
