Pursuing my Professional Development
I believe that I am and always will be learning as a practitioner throughout my career. I am very passionate about actively taking control of my professional development. The fields of CYC, social services and psychology are very dynamic and new information is continually emerging from research. It is very important to me as a practitioner and as a person to know that I am able to always work with best practices. As a practitioner, self-reflection is key to being aware of my strengths, but also of the gaps in my knowledge and areas in need of growth. I believe that the family unit is where a child can receive the love and support to grow. No matter the composition of the family, those primary adults in a child’s life also need to be informed and educated in order to support their child. This personal belief was widely supported during my practicum in Family Services at ENH. My career goal is to work as a school-based youth and family counsellor. In this role, I would be able to work closely with children with harm- reduction approaches while advocating for theirs and their family’s needs. Although I love the family work that I have done and will continue to do at ENH, my passion lies more in working directly with children and youth, within their family and community systems. Additionally, this practicum has showed me the strength of working within a team and that is something that I feel has become important to my success throughout my career. I learnt to be at peace with not knowing everything, nor being able to do everything. In the last year as a student, at work, and in my personal life, I have definitely identified myself as a high achiever. I like to do things right. As a strength, being a high achiever fuels my passions and allows me be to be a task oriented person in order to meet my professional and personal goals. On the other hand, however, this personality trait also means that I tend to be hard on myself and that I often have a difficulty accepting help from others. I have been working on becoming more comfortable with not knowing and have been developing personal techniques that will help me grow. Some of these techniques include making task lists, prioritizing, pushing myself to ask for help or advice, pursuing my professional development, utilizing my team and co-workers for their expertise, and focusing on the successes, small and
