Care Giver Roles

Improved Essays
Wives and Daughters are most likely to take on the care giver role. Women tend to provide more intimate, hands on care such as bathing and feeding. They also put their loved ones before themselves and cut hours at work, give up promotions, and may even quit or retire early from their careers (Caregiving and the Elderly, Smith, 2016). Caregiving comes at a high emotional and physical cost to the caregiver and the care recipient. Many caregivers have higher divorce rates, conflicts with other adult siblings, and or role engulfment. As for emotional and physical risks, caregivers tend to have higher rates of depression and anxiety, illness and injury, and they also tend to pre-decease the care recipient (Caregiving and the Elderly, Smith, 2016).

Since becoming the Senior Social Worker / Acting Caregiver Support Coordinator, I have provided feedback and recommendations that have directly influenced the program’s policies and procedures. For example, when I began working with the program in May 2015, Veterans and their Caregivers had 6 months to appeal the outcome of their assessment for the Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers Programs. Working collaboratively with other program staff, we immediately recognized the length of time needed to be shortened. After agreeing on 45 days to appeal, we discussed these changes with our supervisor, and began implementing this change and communicating it to applicants and program participants. As a result, the appeals are received in a…

I believe, that as a caregiver, you have the opportunity to make a difference in a child’s life by how you guide them. Guiding children can happen in many ways; in how we direct the child throughout the day, encourage them, aid in decision-making, and in how we model healthy and safe choices. In these the caregiver must be consistent and act as is appropriate given the child's development. The way I have learned to guide children has mainly been through experience, trial and error, and by observing my parents as well as other parents and caregivers.…

Canada offers a wide variety of home services and this means that every elderly patient can receive the specific form of care that they require. Also some provinces and territories provided free of charge home care to eligible individuals, and this creates equality because anyone has the option of receiving home care services regardless of their circumstances. The issue is home care services do not provide twenty-four hour care, and so caregivers have to provide a majority of the care to their elderly relative. Also the non-refundable tax that caregivers can claim only benefits them if they are receiving income. Most caregivers are not working due to the fact that balancing a job and being a full time care giver is humanely impossible.…
