There are several concepts we learned about in my community class that apply to my service work. We Care Arts strives to not only stabilize members of the community with disabilities, but they also recognize the need across the entire community and travel to schools, nursing homes, and even hospitals to give art lessons. In this way, We Care Arts strives to help develop the greater Dayton community and not just their clients. In class, we learned about what it means to work towards community development. While some people believe that community development is strictly an economical choice, developing a community also requires getting citizens to care about the future of their city. In Better Together, I learned that areas with better social capital are more successful in creating a growing community. …show more content…
Similar to my community class, lots of the material covered in my Faith and Justice course relates to the service work I performed and the other volunteer work core students participated in. In this course, one of the biggest doctrines we analyzed was Essential Catholic Social Teaching which is the set of guidelines the catholic church follows to ensure they carry out the work of God. Bernard V. Brady, author of Essential Catholic Social Teaching, advocates that life should be oriented around protecting the common good and human dignity. Catholic social teaching proclaims that all laws and rules created through government or in a household should enable citizens and give them opportunities to advance. The catholic church thus advocates to end racism, sexism, and other forms of discrimination that tear down certain groups of people. One major theme outlined in catholic social teaching is that the rich and educated individuals should not live in excess. Rather, they should look out for their fellow community members by volunteering and donating in order to fight the large economic disparity that has been growing in

One of the most exciting things that have happened in this new semester of school is having the opportunity of attending a service learning class. Personally, I believe that it is important to engage not only in educational programs, but also in service learning courses that will help us grow as service agents and leaders in our communities. Having the opportunity of working hand in hand with the House of Loreto is not only an enrichment opportunity, but also since I am studying Occupational Therapy it helps me to have a deeper understanding of the elderly population which I plan on working with in the future. Working closely with the resident Eileen Miller helped me to have a deeper understanding of the course readings and how the elders…

Since attending Spelman College, I have evolved as a person mentally and socially, especially in my efforts regarding volunteering and the production of social change. Before attending Spelman and joining Lady Buds, a mentoring program for young underprivileged girls, I understood to a degree, how social change impacts people and their communities. However, after being a part of Lady Buds, my understanding of social change vastly increased, specifically how it affects the communities within Atlanta and on a larger scale our society. Upon entering Spelman college, I knew I wanted to be involved with a mentoring group, and while there was a multitude of groups to choose from, I decided on Lady Buds because their mission statement resonated with my goal before entering Spelman College.…

I tend to think of this point as the most important point. Standing and serving those in need doesn't have to just be the poor, it could be a friend who was being bullied, or someone who simply needed help with homework. As Catholics, we stand by people who need assistance rather than running away and ignoring them. This summer, I worked at the Center for Food Action, which is a food bank in north Jersey. Helping out and delivering the canned good and donations to the needy was such an amazing experience.…

Homelessness in Virginia has gone up 4.2% in the last three years. Aren’t those facts just a bit unsettling? When I heard we had to a Capstone Project, I knew homelessness in VA had to be incorporated into my project.…

Session five was a big stepping stone for me, I believe I asked questions that guided her and properly validated her feelings, not to mention my powerful use of silence during the whole session. This reflection will shift gears from how I originally lay out my reflections. I usually express the goals I said I would work on and then share the progress I made during the succeeding session. However, I shared my uncertainty about where to take our session after the last one. I believe this doubt helped session five unfold the way it did.…

Collaboration has played a major role both personally and for my community. My first experience with collaborations is when I joined a FIRST robotics team. As you can imagine, I had to work with teammates of every kind in order to produce a final product. However, the more I became involved with the team, the more I started working with people outside the team. For example, the team and I started several new fund raisers that helped promote community collaboration.…

The senior project kick-off made feel that I am going on the right path with my project, during the begging of the school year I didn't really know what to do with my project. As the year went on and doing my research paper, I got an idea of what I really want to do with my project and the main point of my project. Speaking in front of adults is a lot different from speaking to my fellow classmates because with your classmates your a lot comfortable speaking in front of them and used to being around them and speaking in front of them. While on the other hand with adults its a lot harder because its like you have to be a lot more professional and try to get them interested and understand what you are talking about or what you're bringing to…

Before starting my practicum at Lutheran Social Services I already had researched information regarding those within the elderly. I wanted to explore seeing ways I can offer my services for those within this population before taken such action. I honestly wasn’t sure how I was going to be able to apply doing “inform scientific inquiry” without knowing how to do this in an effective way or back up the information I had gathered. So overall, what I had thought about this competency was that I had to get experience in this in order to help someone when the time comes for I can assist them with confidence. There are a range of things that I still have yet to discover about this competency.…

Capstone class has challenged my communication, writing, and presentation skills. These skills I have improved on and found my voice in doing presentation. Working in a group has thought me on how to communicate with difficult people especially when everyone has their own opinion. An event in my life that will influence my academic goals at CCU was the passing of my mother on 09/16/2015. She passed so suddenly that we weren’t prepared, neither mentally nor financially. We didn’t know how we were going to pay for her services but God allowed generous people to be moved to donate to our memorial fund. We reached our goal and then some and it was just so inspiring, I felt God was with me and my siblings every step of the way. When she passed God gave me His peace and allowed me to grieve supernaturally quickly.…
