Cardiologist Interview Essay

I interviewed a cardiologist named Dr. Frank Amico he was very helpful in answering my questions about what it takes to be a cardiologist and what he loves about his job. I learned that he spent a total of twelve years and $228,000 on his schooling after high school. The twelve years included four years of an undergraduate degree, four years of medical school and eight years at his residency, when the minimum is three years. He spent so much time in his residency learning everything there was about the heart, specializing in four different areas. It ranges from $323,895 to $486,460 annually but non-invasive cardiologists salaries don’t differ too much. It makes sense that someone would pay over $200,000 to gain their degree because they are able to sufficiently pay off their debt after they are through with residency if they manage their money right. The job opportunities in the field of cardiology are actually fairly open because there is such a high demand for cardiologists that there aren’t enough being trained to fill those positions basically causing a shortage of doctors specializing in cardiology. When I asked Dr. Amico what the positive and negatives were to his career he replied with very direct answers. He stated, “Mostly I enjoy saving someone’s life in an emergency which is why I picked the fields I did” (Dr. F Amico, personal web communication, September 27, 2016). He also expressed that the skills he learned helps to save someone’s life along with provide for his family and give assistance to any other family members that may need it.
