Cardinal's Descriptive Essay: A Walk In The Woods

The morning air was crisp as Steven began to exit his truck. “It’s a chilling one this morning.”, he said as condensation exclaimed from his breath on a late October morning. Steven loves to start the weekend with a Saturday morning hike at his favorite trail. As a lawyer, quality time to himself is scarce. Hikes give him an opportunity to relax and reflect. He placed his old St. Louis Cardinal baseball cap on top of his head and started his stroll into the thickly wooded area.
His hike had stopped prematurely when he stumbled upon a doe and her fawn. They were laying near the path. “They’re beautiful.” He thought to himself as they ran further into the woods from being startled. The lawyer continued his walk among the oak tree-lined path. As he strolled along the trail, he would pick up the acorns from the wild oak trees. Steven tossed them one by one at trees that he would pass. This had become a game to him. He preferred to pick some of the thinner trees to test the accuracy of his throw. “Thud…. thud.” As each acorn he threw was on target each time.

When he decided it was time for him to take a break. He agreed to himself that he would finish throwing the last few acorns in his hand and he would rest against the large oak tree that was positioned to his rear. He held the last acorn when he heard a rustling of leaves. The noise did not come from afar nor behind him, but from right in front of him. The rusting was so close, it sounded as if it were coming from under his size 10 Hi-Tec hiking shoes. He looked down and to his surprise, a small but plump squirrel! The small rodent was standing on his hind legs, with his small hands in front of him and not looking at Steven, but at the one last acorn, he held loosely. “Is this what you want?” asked Steven. He bent down at placed out his hand. “If you want it, then take it.” Without missing a beat, the rodent snatched the acorn and ran up an oak

Reflecting on the college application process, I noticed that the college essays were stressed very highly, but all the prompts ask for the same thing. Whether they are asking for an eventful moment, your passion, a hobby, or a chosen outsourced prompt, many students seem to convey the same messages in their essays. To get around this, one must ask a more inconspicuous prompt where the student’s character shows through their unique ideas. A prompt that is universal, conveys a meaning, and is always answered uniquely must ask for a narrative: Write a creative story. Walking through the woods one night, Agatha Johansson could not wait to arrive at her friend’s house.…

It is no secret that the idea of wilderness grips every American citizen. Some authors including, William Cronon, have gone to great lengths to explain American infatuation with the wild. Cronon in his article The Trouble with Wilderness, Or Getting Back to the Wrong Nature, presents the sublime nature of wilderness as one of the reasons Americans imagine nature. I believe both I, Krakauer and Chris McCandless disagree with William’s Cronon’s assessment of the American psyche. Rather than seeing the wilderness as, “rare places on earth where one had more chance than elsewhere to glimpse the face of God” (Cronon), Krakauer, McCandless and most Americans believe wilderness is a place to find yourself.…

The author’s purpose for writing A Walk in the Woods is to inform the audience about the Appalachian Trail and the species that contribute to the trail. Bill Bryson, additionally, uses specific details to describe his journey of discovering himself and experiencing his surroundings. Bryson uses humor in order to tell the story of his adventure. In turn, he entertains his audience and keeps them interested in the book. His use of all three purposes allows him to alternate between describing the history of the trail, informing the audience about his journey, and reflect on how the events he experienced on the trail impacted him even after he was done hiking.…

The author of “On Natural Death” by Lewis Thomas begins his essay by being lighthearted about death and progressively gets more into depth with the aspects of death for different living things and whether or not they detect pain. This is to objectify the fact that death is destined for all living things and that it shouldn’t be planned or feared but instead, it should be accepted. The first strategy Lewis Thompson uses is denouncing books about death. Lewis emphasizes that death is becoming planned with there being “so many new books about dying” placed next to “the health diet and home repair paperbacks”. Lewis insinuates that the topic of planned death is considered ordinary to where it’s placed next to everyday topics and accepted by society who doesn’t think twice about it.…
