Carcinogenicity Test

Decent Essays
These animals are treated very inhumane; they are treated as if they are objects, instead of the innocent animals that they are. They are intentionally put through excruciating experiments to determine the safety of a product. The eye irritancy test is when animals, typically rabbits, are restrained and a substance, like shampoo or body wash, is dripped into one of their eyes. They experience extreme agony because their eyes begin to turn red, swell, bleed, form ulcers, and they may even go blind. After completing this test, they are killed. Mice and rats are normally used for the carcinogenicity test. This is when a carcinogen is either inhaled, placed on the skin, or given orally over a two-year period. Then they are killed, and their tissues

Due to the extreme controversy over the topic the Animal Welfare Act was signed into law. This protects the animals and sets guidelines and laws at both the state and local level in order to regulate animal research. This law states that animals must give the animals: access to clean food and water, regular inspections by vets, proper enclosure size, and appropriate temperature. So the animals are not being exposed to improper conditions, or they shouldn’t be according to the law. Also in order to even use animals for research you must be approved by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee or the IACUC.…

How has science contributed to the modern Cinderella makeover?. Science plays a big part in makeup because chemist and engineers are always working on creating new products for people to use and then they improve the old ones. To make makeup related products you need intensive research and advanced technology to make sure the substances are able to be applied on the face. The advantages in having science in makeup is that scientist, chemist and researchers make sure that people don't get any bad reactions from the substances they are making.…

The main reason is because animals are biologically different from humans. For example, a mouse can produce Vitamin C on it’s own, they have no gall bladder, and can not throw up, therefore, they should not be one of the most commonly used animals for testing products. There are many cases in which there are various studies showing the effect of a certain cancer but then it does not cause cancer in an animal when tested. This is due to them having a different anatomy and makeup. As everyone learns growing up, everyone reacts differently to various chemicals.…

According to Michael Pollan’s article, “An Animal’s Place”, the hens and pigs are being raised in an unhealthy and tiny environment just for the profits leading the animals to suffer greatly. The farmers create opportunities for the animals to hurt each other to the point that the animals can’t endure the pain anymore and even lead them to die (6). This shows how animals live a tough life without proper care and without being loved by humans. Animals are also used as tools for research experiments. Two examples of research studies that are described by Peter Singer through his article, “The Animal Liberation Movement”, show how rabbits become blind through symptoms such as swollen lids, inflamed iris, ulcerated cornea” after the Draize Test for cosmetic companies, and he also mentions how half of the sample of animals such as rats, mice, or dogs are poisoned to death in order to test for the Lethal Dose 50 test for a certain substance (Singer 7).…

“If you want to test cosmetics, why do it on some poor animal who hasn 't done anything? They should use prisoners who have been convicted of murder or rape instead. So, rather than seeing if perfume irritates a bunny rabbit 's eyes, they should throw it in Charles Manson 's eyes and ask him if it hurts,” said comedian Ellen DeGeneres in My Point... And I Do Have One, her humorous reflection on her life. Though Ellen DeGeneres makes a hyperbolic point, she questions the ethicality of animal testing.…

Animal testing is an inhumane, ineffective method of research. One reason is that these tests do not transition successfully into human trials. There is a low percentile of human diseases that are seen in animals. Over 98% of these illnesses never affect animals. Smoking was originally thought to be non-carcinogenic; this was because the cancer which was caused by smoking was difficult to reproduce in laboratory animals.…

[1] Even the most innocent sounding test becomes torture when is directly applied. Cosmetics companies use an eye test in order to evaluate irritation caused by shampoos and other products. Mostly rabbits are used for this test. The animals are being incapacitated with their eyelids held open by clips, in some cases for many days, so they cannot blink away the products being tested. [2] These tests are not isolated incidents perpetrated by rogue companies.…

Animal testing is cruel and inhumane. These animals are subjected to forced feeding, forced inhalation, food and water deprivation, prolonged periods of physical restraint, infliction of burns and wounds to study the healing process and effects and remedies. Among the cruelest experiments is the Draize eye test which evaluates irritation by shampoos and other products to the eyes. During this experiment rabbits are restrained and their eyelids are held open by clips for multiple days which leads to the death of 50% of rabbits used (Scientific American, "Do Cosmetic Companies Still Test on Live Animals?," scientificamerican.com). We also are very different from animals; having different metabolic, anatomical, and cellular differences.…

The website animal-test.procon.org shares how animals are being treated in the Draize Acute Toxicity test. The supposed reason for this experiment is to see if there is irritation caused by shampoos or other cosmetic products. The test involves “…scientists use clips to hold a rabbits’ eyelid open for multiple days, so they cannot blink when products are being tested” (animal-test.procon.org). This barbaric process results in hemorrhaging and blindness. Even more shocking is that if an animal does endure test, they are subject to that treatment again; if they do not recover, then they are killed.…

You don’t have the option to choose when and what you eat, how you will spend your time, whether or not you will have a partner and children, or liberty to choose that partner. Why Animal Testing Should Be Banned Everyday innocent animals are being forced into labs and tested for human research advancement. Cruelty Free International states how approximately 115 million animals, including rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, rats, mice, dogs and monkeys are used in dangerous laboratory experiments every year. In fact, many of the experiments are said to be useless tests, as stated, “The reality is that the majority of animal experiments do not contribute to improving human health, and the value of the role that animal experimentation plays in most medical advances is questionable” (“Animal Testing is Bad Science”). Misconceptions by the media may stretch the idea how animal testing can cure diseases, illnesses etc.. But actually, as emphasized, animal testing is an inefficient way of finding medical advances, making the procedures to be unnecessary and making there be no reason to force animals into labs without a choice, it's blatantly a waste of animals lives.…
