Graduation Speech: What Will Happen At Cornell University

As a resident of the city of Ithaca, New York for the past 19 years, I have had many great experiences in this “collegetown”. Ithaca is unique in that we are surrounded by greenery everywhere and are in the backyard of Cayuga Lake, the longest of the five Finger Lakes. We are becoming more farm-friendly for produce and we are always conscientious about sustainable development. This fall, Cornell University released a report outlining its plan to become carbon neutral by 2035, a huge step in making the planet great again. By making sure our campus isn’t emitting lots of carbon in the atmosphere, we are removing one of the major contributions to increased climate change. It may not as important compared to improving the economy and diminishing poverty, but global warming is responsible for many adverse effects, including ocean acidification and coral bleaching. Even if not everyone shares the popular and morally responsible view that humans are mostly accountable for this threatening phenomenon, we should be able to …show more content…
Neil deGrasse Tyson where he said a brilliant quote that struck out to me: “...We 're dumping carbon dioxide into the atmosphere at a rate the Earth hasn 't seen since the great climate catastrophes of the past, the ones that led to mass extinctions. We just can 't seem to break our addiction to the kinds of fuel that will bring back a climate last seen by the dinosaurs, a climate that will drown our coastal cities and wreak havoc on the environment and our ability to feed ourselves. The dinosaurs never saw that asteroid coming. What 's our excuse?” We only have a limited amount of time to fix this planet since Congress refuses to give more money to NASA to continue the exploration for a new habitable planet and we seem to be unable to terraform Earth back into Earth. Until we as humans realize that climate change is a problem, a solution won’t arise and we will be stuck fending off against nature

Evaluation Argument As humans are we driving ourselves into a sixth extinction? According to Elizabeth Kolbert, writer of The Sixth Extinction, we as humans are so careless that we are literally driving ourselves into a nonexistence. The book starts off with stories of how different species has become extinct or are currently endangered. The book has a lot of facts and they all seem to support the theory that humans are making a mess of things.…

In the Anthropocene we are met with an imminent realization that climate change will alter the current way of life as we know it today. Coming to terms with this knowledge is never easy and artist from around the world have contributed their views and ideas on what the future may potentially be. Cormac McCarthy brings us into a world that has been morphed by an unknown catastrophe. This story follows a classic McCarthy structure by being as vague as possible with the names of the characters and the places they intend to go. A man and his son journey along a road in order to reach the coast where the weather is apparently warmer.…

Being environmentally conscious has been the focus of many people for several years, and by judging how much the media has begun to cover such a topic, it will be the concern of more and more people as time passes. Since this planet is the only one we have to live on so far, we need to take care of it the best we possibly can before it’s too late to fix our mistakes. To start, each person will need to see the reason behind taking care of our planet, which is that global warming is a legitimate issue, and every single person on the planet can either make a positive or negative impact on it. Each of the essays I evaluated spoke of different issues regarding or touching on global warming that I had not previously thought too much about, and effectively…

In the reading, “The Environmental Issue from Hell” the author portrays some of the dangers of global warming, such as how it affects the polar bears in the Arctic, how SUV’s are a big part of the problem and how we can influence change to people by switching to solar power and possibly change the politics that affect global warming greatly. Although the influence of solar increasing and GNP’s is generally reducing the amount of smog that goes in the air slowly, that still doesn’t mean we’re better off now and there’s still much we can do about global warming. McKibben’s main argument is the crisis of global warming is affecting us, animals and how it’s our own doing because of financial gain for the economy the smog that comes certain from…

Scientists that study climate change and greenhouse gases conclude that “we now have overwhelming evidence that human emission of greenhouse gases has already begun to change the climate and it will continue to do so unless emissions are halted” (Oppenheimer and Antilla-Hughes). This quote proves that the emissions of greenhouse gases is the utmost factor in climate change. If we do not do anything about climate change now and continue to contribute to this global problem, future generations will be affected extremely negatively. The changes in precipitation that are created by climate change will cause some places in the world to become drier and other places much wetter. This means that the water will not be dispersed evenly anymore, leaving families in the dry without water access or rising water prices that will definitely not be affordable to the poor.…
