The Negative Effects Of Nuclear Energy

Superior Essays
Current energy methods are destroying what we need to survive: the planet we live on and the air we breathe. Centuries of burning fossil fuels, mainly coal, oil, and other natural gases, has led to massive increases of a greenhouse gas called carbon dioxide. The number one reason that carbon dioxide is being released is for the generation of electricity through the burning of fossil fuels. In order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, we need to change the source of our energy. An alternate form of energy production that is possible immediately is nuclear. Fossil fuels are destroying the environment, and solar energy is not good enough; nuclear power is the answer to human’s energy crisis. The burning of coal is currently our main source of energy. Not only is it destroying the environment, the amount of coal left on the planet will not last long. The waste generated by coal is carbon dioxide, which leads to global warming due to the greenhouse effect. Carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gasses such as methane create a layer of chemicals that absorb infrared radiation …show more content…
From the beginning, there has always been awareness of potential destruction. According to the Nuclear Energy Institute, there are 438 nuclear reactors that account for 10.9 percent of global electricity generation with 67 more plants under construction (“Nuclear Energy around the World”). In the aftermath of Three Mile Island and later Chernobyl, global safety precautions have gone into effect. The Convention on Nuclear Safety (CNS) was created between 1992 and 1994. Its aim is to legally force countries that operate nuclear power plants to maintain a high level of safety by setting benchmarks that would need to be met or surpassed. Due to the Fukushima-Daiichi accident, the Vienna Declaration on Nuclear Safety was created in February of 2015 strengthening the review process of the CNS and forcing a new review on all

Fossil fuels are less efficient and more harmful to the air than nuclear power. There are many reasons why we should stop using coal, one reason is it is one of the essential factors that enhance global warming by releasing more greenhouse gases and carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere. Another reason is they are inefficient old and economically…

Fossil fuels make up most of the world’s energy for electricity and fuel to specify crude oil, coal, and natural gas, each one is different in efficiency, availability, and byproducts, and they are same because they are all burn to get to the energy out and the main byproduct is carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas. (Fischer, Douglas) The more carbon dioxide in the faster temperature rises, so has the emission regulate carbon dioxide emission before it out of control. Also the other byproducts are harmful as to the environment as to human. When fossil fuels are burned they release hydrogen sulfide and sulfur dioxide gases and heavy metals leave behind, when burned it release hydrogen sulfide and sulfur dioxide the gases will mix with water in air to create acid rain that could scar or destroy forests, with second most biodiverse forest being in the U.S. it have to be protected.…

With growing widespread use of nuclear power, around the world and the historic nuclear disaster, of Chernobyl, still in peoples minds it begs the question of whether or not the pros outweigh the cons. Nuclear power provides 20% of the power inside the United States according to the Nuclear Energy Institute and with 104 nuclear power plants inside the US alone the security of these power plants can not be overlooked. Since 911 the security of nuclear power plants took a drastic reform as it showed the real threat of terrorism. With the fear of another 911 regulations were put in place to ensure the security of nuclear power plants around the world after a nuclear power security summit took place.…

In 2014, the US alone used 98.324 quadrillion BTUs of energy. Roughly 82% of that was fossil fuels. Renewable resources accounted for 10%, including solar, wind, hydroelectric, and more, and the remaining 8% was nuclear power. This energy was used to do everything from power our televisions to turn on our lightbulbs. Unfortunately, our reliance on fossil fuels brings with it serious side effects, including global warming.…

Moreover, renewable energy is a natural process, meaning the energy will be sustainable as it will never run out. Fossil fuels emit carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, causing global warming. In the United States, 29 % of the global warming emissions come from the electricity production after burning fossil fuels like coal and natural gas (Inventory, 2018). As opposed to fossil fuels, the majority of the renewable energy sources produce little to no global warming emissions. Solar energy can generate electricity in solar cells without releasing CO2 into the atmosphere.…

Burning coal kills the climate and each other. Coal has been used since the 1880s but now it’s time to get off of coal and go to a new source of energy. Burning coal is the single biggest threat to the Earth’s climate, it sends out carbon dioxide and mercury, fills your body with pollution, and kills our landscape. Coal is changing our world slowly but surely. Co2, also known as carbon dioxide; is hurting the world more than one would originally think.…

As of today, Nuclear Power is one of cleanest and most environmental friendly sources of energy. This is because it produces fewer greenhouse gases during production of electricity (CFF, 2017). More production of nuclear power plants would be able to help with the rising demand for clean and renewable energy. However, due to the accident that happened to the Nuclear Power plant in Japan, many people are hesitant about furthering production because people believe there are ethical issues that are involved. Nuclear power can be very environmental friendly, but like the accident in Japan, it could have many dangerous factors if accidents were to occur.…

Fossil fuels are the leading producer of the energy that we use. The over use of fossil fuels is leading to an abundance of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere. The buildup of carbon dioxide is leading to global warming however, there is something that can help reduce the amount of greenhouse gas being put into our environment. Instead of using fossil fuels to provide energy we can start using wind power. Wind power is considered renewable energy because it continues to exist there is no end to wind.…

Coal energy is the most popular energy producers in the world, because of its rapid production of energy is a small amount of time. However, like I said earlier, there are flaws that are impactful to the human population that can lead to mass deaths and environmental struggles. As a result of the deadly emissions of coal energy, and the enormous amounts of deaths associated with those emissions, it is clear that nuclear energy is much safer to use than coal energy. One of the quickest ways to produce energy is to burn coal, and that whole process is commonly known as coal energy. When coal is burned, there are colorless gases of chemical compounds that are released into the air.…

The Chernobyl disaster in 1986 was one of the worst nuclear accidents in history. Many of the harmful effects can still be seen today, almost 30 years after the incident. The main cause of the accident was a flaw in the reactor 's design, which resulted in an explosion releasing large quantities of radioactive particles into the atmosphere. You may think that with an increase in safety measures and more careful attention to building and design that we can avoid further tragedies, but unfortunately not all disaster is caused by human neglect. The major tsunami that took place in Japan in 2011 led to equipment failures and in turn caused three meltdowns at the Fukushima Power Plant, resulting in the release of radioactive material.…
