Like cars, humans need fuel for energy. While cars use gas for energy, humans use nutrients for energy such as proteins, lipids, and carbohydrates. Proteins, lipids, and carbohydrates are the macronutrients the body need to function smoothly and properly.Out of the three macronutrients, carbohydrates is the main source for energy, it is the body's main source of fuel, and the nutrient use for brain function and organ operation. Unlike proteins and lipids,carbohydrates is easily digested and can quickly be broken down into a component called glucose which the body needs for many different important functions. Tissues and cells in our body rely on carbohydrates, and it also plays an important role in intestinal health and waste elimination. …show more content…
Both simple and complex carbohydrates are turned to glucose in the body and are used as energy. Simple carbohydrates are simple sugars that can be broken down and digested by the body very rapidly, it is made of very little vitamins and minerals. Simple carbohydrates are organized in to two categories, disaccharieds and monosaccharides. Glucose, fructose, and galactose are the energy source of cells in our body and are the base form carbohydrates called monosaccharides. but when two monosaccharides are treated together it is called disaccharides. Examples of simple carbs are table sugar, honey, molasses, syrup, and yogurt. Many monosaccharides bonded together are called polysaccharides, these is how complex carbs are formed. Complex carbohydrates are starches the body brakes down as glucose for energy and can be restored as glycogen. Glycogen is a multi branched polysaccharide of glucose that serves as a form of energy storage. Unlike simple carbohydrates, Complex carbohydrates is rich in vitamins, fiber and minerals.
