A 300 word moodle post and a 5 minute debate isn’t nearly enough time for me to express how disgusting I find the article “The Coddling of the American Mind.” I could go through it paragraph by paragraph and critique each line, but I cannot bring myself to read that horrid piece again. While researching this topic I came across multiple articles that have the same views as me, which is refreshing after reading a 25 page article that I find fundamentally wrong. Trigger warnings are absolutely essential for preserving the mental well-being of college students, as it is not the professor’s job to “cure” the affected student with unexpected reminders of the past. Lindsay Holmes’ article “A Quick Lesson…
While watching the film “Lalee’s Kin”, I gather as much information needed to be able to help assess this families concerns. Information that include the Lalee’s family economic status, in which they were living in poverty coming from a background of sharecroppers and slavery. Some addition information I retain about Lalee’s family, was their educational status, which Lalee only had a six grade education. Lalee’s family demographics, which Lalee had three grandchildren living with her and her own children. The environment they live in was the delta in Mississippi and this area was a rural and poor.…

PH’s treatment involves a combination of psychotherapy and antidepressant medication. Following the social learning/interpersonal model, the focus of his therapy is increasing PH’s activity level and helping him learn new social skills, encouraging PH to take part in activities such as joining the other residents in playing bingo, to functions that take place outside of the facility, such as going to museum. One of the hopes is to interrupt and reverse the ongoing process in which social isolation, rumination, and inactivity are leading to increased depression, depression is leading him to further withdraw himself from others. Through the development of new response patterns, particularly those involving interpersonal communication and social…
While observing Occupational Therapy Assistant Fatima deCouto-Garcia, (a BCC program OTA graduate), at The New Bedford Rehab Hospital, we were tasked with focusing on recognizing the performance skill deficits and contextual factors that brought a client to seek Occupational Therapy services. The facility we visited is considered an acute long term rehabilitation hospital and the patients we observed each had complex multi-facetted symptoms, diagnosis and treatment protocols. For the purpose of this reflection we will focus on one patient, a 45 year old woman, Jane Doe, who 6 weeks prior had her left leg amputated above the knee. Jane was described as a homeless, diabetic, suffering from depression. The high level of Jane’s daily methadone dosage was preventing her acceptance to a skilled nursing…
In this paper I will be talking about what I learned in my interview with Lauren Roberts an Occupational Therapist at The Kids SpOT. Everyday tasks that are carried out by most people can be taken for granted, including getting dressed or even combing the hair. However, these jobs can become difficult for individuals suffering from mental, social and physical health problems. Occupational therapists can help them get back to having a satisfactory quality of life. The primary role of an occupational therapist is to provide a service to improve and maintain patient’s skills that will help them with their day to day activities resulting in enhancing their quality of life.…
Prior to beginning the masters of occupational therapy program it was as if I was an ancient wanderer in the dark ages, eager to learn new ideas and discover new places not sure what the world would throw at me next. Over the next eight years I found myself at a series of personal crossroads one encounters during life’s journey. Not the crossroad where one sells their soul to the devil for some magical power. It was more of one of those forks in the road, a kin to the Robert Frost Poem, where one path leads to life A and the other leads to life B. Crossroads that impacted my future, shaped who I am and my character, influenced life changes, which led to a transition that will influence me and my family for generations to come. I come from…
It seems odd that a client would present for treatment while simultaneously being opposed to making changes, but this is indeed what counselors frequently encounter. Such clients are usually coerced into therapy. A person in legal trouble may be offered a deferred sentence for undergoing outpatient treatment if they are assessed to have a substance-use disorder (SUD) or other behavioral problem which contributed to the offense. Others might seek treatment to assuage family members, avoid a divorce, keep a home, or to stay employed. These clients do not necessarily wish to change their behavior; they simply wish to cushion some consequences.…
Psychological disorders and mental health issues in today’s society affect many people in a variety of ways. Many people in society are often stigmatized and labeled because of a psychological disorder shunning them from society, the work place, schools, friends, and more. However, recently through my research I see how many people are working their jobs, handling their careers, never stop working and aspiring with their goals, and face varied challenges at home, work, and out socially using a variety of therapies from medications, to psychologist visits, and even psychotherapy. There are over four hundred types of psychological disorders.…
