Car Clerks Case Study Solution

Q3. If the second clerk could be added anywhere you choose (and not necessarily to check for violations, as in Question 2), what is the maximum number of applications the process can handle? What is the new configuration?
Approach: Analyzed the question, we added one more clerk in step 2 (process and record payment). Then use the formula as question 1 and 2 to calculate.
Figure 3.1 Solution: When add the second clerk in step 2, then solve and record payments. We could see the above pictures, 2 clerks in step 2 will be worked together in the same station. However, they also need to divide the time. Because we added one more clerk in step 2, one clerk needs 15 seconds per application. Therefore, the bottleneck for the license-renewal operation is step 3 and step 3 needs 60 seconds. Finally, we could get the formula: capacity per hour =3600 seconds per hour divided 60 seconds per application= 60

In this case, Henry who is the manager of the company needs to consider the cost and enhances the efficiency. So he could use layout strategy to help him get the goal. Based on this case study, we have given some recommendations. We suggest that Henry could add one more operator for step 3 and step 4 to finish the task, which could save more time and shrink the cost. This is one of the most important topics discussed in this book. It is the concept that Alex is advised to use to change the fate of the manufacturing plant and avoid the consequences ahead of him. The first thing to do in application of this concept is to identify the slowest element in the whole system. These elements are referred to as bottlenecks and make it difficult for the plant to achieve smooth operations. Every company has bottlenecks and their identification and resolution can help make things move faster. The manufacturing plant in question has a number of bottlenecks, but there is a specific machine that is performing the worst. Focusing on improving the overall performance of this machine can improve order processing considerably. However, bottlenecks do not just come in form of slow machines. A bottleneck can be a worker who does not function in an efficient manner, a tradition that slows down the company or even norms or regulations that pull down the company’s operational efficiency. The process of eliminating bottlenecks is continuous, until the company or plant reaches its maximum potential. It is important to note that the focus is not on improving the efficiency of the already efficient machines or workers. These will continue to function properly, as long as the bottleneck machine increases its…

Upon further research, Alex and team realizes that their problem arose from the fact that non-bottlenecks were working at max capacity resulting into parts getting stacked up at the bottleneck, eventually leading up to the longer wait times at non-bottleneck parts for other dependent operations to finish the final assembly. So, they modify the ‘red and green system’ by putting old machines back into the service to perform the bottleneck operations. This solution does seem to resolve the problem at hand, but deems inadequate when Mr. Peach mandates fifteen percent improvement for the next month. Jonah suggests cutting the batch sizes in half, so that all the costs would also be reduced by half, resulting into faster delivery times and comparatively smaller lead times for the new orders. This proves a viable solution, resulting into Alex’s promotion to the regional office, where he would manage three plants and new challenges await him. It becomes crucial for Alex to get his new team in-lined and on-boarded with his recent learnings from Jonah to achieve a similar success at the regional…
