Capuchins are a New World Monkeys, they are native to Central and South America. Capuchins often times live in large groups between ten and thirty-five. They are normally found in tropical forest high in the trees. Their mode of locomotion is mainly arboreal, but they do spend some time terrestrially. They spend most of their days searching for food, they also like to take a midday nap, and they sleep during the night high up in the trees in nest like beds on branches. Capuchins are normally black, brown, and they have a whitish tan color for facial markings. The color pattern or patterns may also be slightly different depending on the exact specie of capuchin monkey. Their bodies range in length between 12 to 22 inches long, their tails can also be just as long as their bodies (Encyclopedia …show more content…
The transmission of this behavior is learned and passed between capuchins. Capuchins were also one of the first non-human primates that discovered tool use in the wild (livescience). The capuchins diets consist of plants, plant parts, nuts, bulbs, and seeds, they are mostly vegetarian. They also consume insects as well as organisms with an exoskeleton. Sometimes they also consume vertebrates like frogs and rare cases they even consume other primates. Their diet is important because it proves the type tools needed. They used rocks as hammers and anvils to crack open the seeds and nuts, one of their favorite food is the palm nut. With the selection process they start off by choosing a heavy stone that they know will crack the desired nut without using too much of their energy and too many strikes. Since the capuchins are very small, they need to choose a rock that won’t wear them out too fast. These monkeys are very smart, they will choose a heavy small rock over a lighter bigger rock, they do this because they will exert more energy with a bigger lighter rock than a smaller heavier rock.
