Hamsters are omnivores they eat mixes containing seed, grain and nuts. Also give small amounts of fresh fruit and vegetables, such as apple, carrot, broccoli, pear and cabbage. Avoid citrus fruits, such as oranges, as they're too acidic. But they also eat small insects, as well as that some of the commercial foods contain animal protein such as fish and chicken. In the wild hamsters eat insects like frogs, lizards and other small animals, they also forage for nuts and seeds.

A captive hamster's diet should be at least 16 percent protein and 5 percent fat. Hamsters should be feed fresh fruit on a daily basis such as cabbage and carrot. But too much leafy greens can cause diarrhoea. Commercial hamster food is supposed to have all the nutritional
