I respect his perspective based on his experience, but believe being a leader in today’s Army means being a total soldier who can maneuver from tactical to strategic understanding the complexities of being an executive all the while being able to relate to the soldier on the ground doing his/her respective…
Throughout this semester our class has been gathering information about the modern American military conflicts, either through book review or class PowerPoints. This newly gained information of our nation history has helped me create an understanding what leadership actually is and how certain people are able to have it. What helped me gather my view of leadership the most was the five leadership analysis on House to House: An Epic Memoir of War, We were soldiers once… And Young, The Last Stand Of fox company, Company Commander and Four hours in My Lai.…
The process of influencing others to accomplish the mission by providing purpose, direction, and motivation is the military definition of leadership. It was established September 17, 1993 and signed by Gen Gordon R. Sullivan, Chief of Staff. I have chosen one leader that I believe fits within this category. I did not want to choose the typical like Martin Luther King Jr. or Abraham Lincoln, but rather a lesser known leader who stands out to me. Her name is Constance Wu.…
MSG Rick The third of my leader examples is my first Team Sergeant, Master Sergeant (MSG) Rick. Rick was his first name and on an Operational Detachment Alpha (ODA), we called each other by our first names. Rick was a scruffy looking person with a “porn stasche” and an abrasive personality.…
about them. They do not understand the intent of the mission and their leadership cannot give them a valid reason for why they are conducting IED searches a specific way or why they cannot get proper equipment to protect themselves at the traffic control points. This lack of communication creates a very toxic environment and if it is not identified early and provided with a solution, it can lead to very deadly situations happening to soldiers and local civilians they are supposed to be protecting. The concept of Toxic Leadership plays a major role in the development of the situation that occurred in Black Hearts and in other disastrous situations that occur to soldiers while down range. Toxic leaders are defined as leaders who have a charismatic…
Being a cheerleader and being a result only leader both have their negative and positive consequences. Colonel Davenport and Brigadier General Savage both become very close to their followers near the end of their time with the 918th Bomb Group, which makes their follower’s deaths throughout combat even harder to deal with. It also makes it harder for them to be strict to their followers, because they become basically family. Having a family dynamic with one’s followers can be a good thing, but if it is taken too far it can lead to stressful consequences for the leader. Brigadier General Savage and General Pritchard both showed coercive and authority based leadership, but these traits were most prevalent in Brigadier General Savage.…
CPT Winters is the obvious leader in the show Band of Brothers. In episode 5 we see his leadership tested in many ways, as a combat leader, as a leader among leaders, and in an administrative role. In each role he handles himself and his men in a manner that ensures success, and is one of the best examples of how a leader ought to act given various situations. We will investigate first CPT Winters himself as a leader in various situations, secondly the men below him in how they respond to his leadership and the situation, and thirdly at the situation holistically, in order to gain a better understanding of what happened and how CPT Winters‘ actions achieved success. CPT Winters has two significant values, firstly, that of the objective, and…
In particular the issue of allowing yourself to be thought of as just one of the guys. I have witnessed this type of leadership failure many times throughout my career. Leaders that develop close bonds to their subordinates and develop a relationship that completely blurs the hierarchal structure of authority and responsibility. These leaders are seen as mostly ineffective and are often removed. However, they are revered by their personnel but not for reasons of efficiency or mission accomplishment, but because they were great people.…

Profession of Arms produces expert work effectively, and the servant ethic develop expertise and use that expertise for the betterment of society. Professional Soldiers have good motivation and self-control. Seek responsibility and take responsibility for your actions, what that means is that when you do something, make a decision, whatever it may be, take responsibility for them. Being a leader of any kind, at any level means someone either looks up to you, or they simply look to you for guidance. When you have people under you, or that you are in charge of, you have to be on top of things, know how to handle any situation, and if you do not know how to handle a situation, then know where you can find information on how to handle the situation. Marines past, present, and future all have had to and will have to take responsibilities for their actions. In some way, shape, or form we cannot just try and weasel our way out of a situation.…
Leadership is defined as influencing others by providing purpose, motivation, and direction (ADP 6-22). A leader will not always be the smartest person, there will always be someone more proficient in tactics or marksmanship than they are. A leader will not always be the strongest person, someone will always have a higher APFT score. These things don’t make them bad leaders, these things make them human. A leader is there to guide their soldiers.…
As a Marine, the civilian world sees us as an immaculate figure to the United States. In a way giving us the respect and honor we so proudly earn. Inside the Marine Corps we learn to honor these values and morals we received since boot camp. It molds us to become disciplined and show this figure to others. If we loose focus as a Marine we sadly decline that and become to be a lesser than normal civilian.…
LT McDonough Leadership assessment The book Platoon Leader provides a wide range of leadership situations and challenges. LT McDonough was, as a rule, very successful in dealing with intellectually challenging problems. His interpersonal tact left much to be desired and even his resilience was nearly broken down. Overall, he led his platoon very well and successfully.…
Faculty and students at the U.S. Army War College stated in 2003that toxic leaders are focused on visible short-term missions and accomplishments. They provide superiors with impressive, articulate presentations and enthusiastic responses to the mission, but they are unconcerned about, or oblivious to, staff or troop morale and/or climate. Toxic leaders are seen as arrogant, self-serving, inflexible, and petty (Ulmer, 2012). Ulmer proposed a definition of a toxic leader as “individuals whose behavior appears driven by self-centered careerism at the expense of their subordinates and unit, and whose style is characterized by abusive and dictatorial behavior that promotes an unhealthy organizational climate”. Background George is the chief of…
