Captain Nemo In 20, 000 Leagues Under The Sea

In the book 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea by Jules Verne, Captain Nemo, who built a self-sustaining submarine to with the thought of abandoning humanity and never coming back. Gradually this drives him insane. In the beginning he has secluded himself from humanity and seems to dislike people, however, throughout the novel he slowly changes from a level-headed man to a broken man who is full of anguish. Aronnax watches Nemo as he slowly learns that how hiding behind technology can't solve your problems.

During the first stage of the theme Pierre Aronnax is taken captive by Captain Nemo and although Nemo seems suspicious he seems genuinely fair-minded. Nemo has just saved and imprisoned Aronnax although he seems strict he is kind to Aronnax and gives him a luxurious life. Captain Nemo continues to treat Aronnax well, but something isn't quite right.

Begrudgingly Aronnax continues to live in the Nautilus he develops a relationship with Nemo, which begins to show him how detached Captain Nemo is from the world. In the event that Nemo's former life is ever mentioned he simply changes the subject and nothing much is ever revealed except that Nemo seems to hate the outside world. With only his ship to keep him away from his problems and not solve them, he starts to snap and eventually destroys a ship from the same nationality that killed his family. In many cases Aronnax attempts to talk sense into him but, he looses it and says, "I am the law, I am the justice! I am the oppressed, and they are the oppressor!" Sadly, however, destroying the ship does not solve anything and only shifts him to become even more erratic because of this. He begins to see that the action he took made him just as bad and starts destroying the submarine by sending it into a massive
