At the beginning of the book, Captain McBane a man that calls himself captain, he was born poor. And he became rich from exploiting prison labor. Captain McBane does not like how black and white are incarcerated together, in his mind they are basically equal but cannot be together. According to McBane “I propose a toast: No nigger domination” (Chestnutt 37) McBane basically says this because he knows that Black people are coming up in society and getting higher jobs, that white men could get because of their white privilege. He wants to advance white supremacy because most the blacks are starting to take all the jobs and they will eventually dominate if they are not stopped.
