Captain Hook Is A Good Villain: Peter Pan

When you think of a hero, what comes to mind? For me, it’s a villain. A villain, or antagonist, is meant to make the job of the hero, or protagonist, harder and more interesting. Without Captain Hook, Peter Pan would simply be a boy that doesn’t grow up surrounded by the lost boys. There would be no need for the boys to learn to use a sword or shoot boys. Peter Pan would simply be existing and there would be no story to tell. Captain Hook is essential to the story. He is a good villain because he not only moves the story along, but without him, there would be no story to tell, but most importantly, makes Peter Pan who he is. Captain Hook is the villain in Peter Pan. He is a good villain because he doesn’t stop making life difficult for Peter Pan and the lost boys for even a second. Captain Hook always has an idea or plan on how to make life difficult for the protagonists of the story whether it be to kidnap Princess Tiger-Lilly to make the Indians mad at the lost boys and hold them hostage or kidnap the lost boys and their “mother” Wendy. However, though they are evil actions, without them, the story would be stagnant at a point where Wendy tells the boys stories and they just run around and do nothing all day. Though the villain is evil, they are essential to the process of the story. Villains are essential for story progression to occur. Without a villain, there would be no need for a hero. Captain Hook is a perfect example because he is selfish and thinks only of the importance of himself and what he wants. Captain Hook is essential to the way the story not only begins but also ends because he wants to kill Peter Pan in return for when Peter chopped off his hand and gave it to the crocodile.
