Captain Cook Significance

Expedition by sea accounted for a major significance in the discovery of new continents and islands; evidently, progressing the livelihood and development of many countries throughout time. As for many explorers, Captain James cook was a significant British explorer and navigator. James cook was born in 1728 in Yorkshire, England. James cook was commonly recognized for his discoveries of the Hawaiian Islands and his three voyages of exploration across the South Pacific. Captain Cook was also acknowledged for his brilliant and detailed documentation of his discoveries. James cook developed his talent as a mapmaker in the British royal navy. This observation could only be witnessed through the sailing of the southern hemisphere. Cook was also required to search for a large hypothetical continent, known as the Terra Australis. James cook took on this voyage in 1768 with only one ship; commonly referred to as the Endeavor. Throughout cook’s travel, Tahiti became of great significance to his voyage. Not only did Tahiti provide a key location to observe the transit of Venus; according to the passage Captain James Cook, “Centrally located in the South Pacific, with good harbors, friendly inhabitants, a balmy climate, and abundant food and water, Tahiti would prove an important site for rest and reprovisioning on cooks voyage”. Without this territory, cooks travel would not have been as successful. However, by successfully observing the transit of Venus, Captain Cook continued his travels southwest, in which he discovered remarkable pieces of land. The lands of which included the north and south islands of New Zealand. He was also the first European to navigate the entire length of Australia’s eastern coast and conquer it for Britain.
