In Cinema, the most common story told is the hero myth. It is a ten-step formula that depicts the transformation of the protagonist on his journey to heroism. When we first see the protagonist, they are portrayed as average people living normal lives. In Captain America: The First Avenger Steve Rogers is a scrawny boy from Brooklyn and in The Wizard of Oz Dorothy is a regular girl from Kansas. Then something occurs in the protagonist life that jumpstarts their journey. In Captain America, Steve Rogers finally enlist in the military under the “Super-Soldier Experiment.” In some cases, the hero is reluctant to leave their environment and are hesitant to embark on the journey that lies ahead. The hero is often accompanied by a helper or mentor to guide them towards their goal.

After this transformation, the hero is prepared to take on their journey, followed by the sixth step, which is to take on the obstacles needed to achieve their goal. In Captain America, Steve Rogers must defeat HYDRA with his newfound strength and stop the main antagonist Schmidt, who plans to bomb America. In the seventh step, “the hero often hits rock bottom… [or encounters] a death experience, leading to a type if rebirth” which leads them to the eighth step of completing the journey (337). In Captain America, he sacrifices himself to stop the bombs from destroying America. The ninth step consists of the hero returning to where their journey began and in the final step, “he must face the final ordeal before being reborn as a hero” (338). It is revealed in the end, Steve Rogers has awoken in America 70 years in the future where he takes it upon himself to be the hero America
