Both men have similar traits or motives that the devil has. In the movie, Chillingworth offered to share a house with Dimmesdale and Dimmesdale’s health starts to slowly worsen. This is because Chillingworth is giving him potions that make his health poor, but at the same time they keep him alive. Like the Devil, Chillingworth won Dimesdale over with fake kindness and concern making Dimmesdale believe he was good, but in reality, he was only trying to keep him alive until he was of no use for Chillingworth anymore.
