The Lehigh Valley is considered the third most populated region in the state of Pennsylvania. Northampton County holds 298,476 people. The majority of the population is 89.4% of the population consisting of white persons, 10.8% consisting of persons of Hispanic or Latino origin, and 5.8% consisting of black persons (Census 2012). There are about 30 different Spanish restaurants within a 20-30 mile radius. There is a lot of competition, however all of those restaurants are proclaimed as Mexican restaurants. There will be a major difference between what my catering company will offer and what these restaurants offer, just based on food alone. The one catering company in Hellertown, PA that offers somewhat of Puerto Rican cuisine is, The Meadows. Although they offer to cook it for you, it is not what they specialize in and it does not taste like authentic Puerto Rican food (based on a taste test). After calling around and looking through the Yellow Pages, I have found that there is zero authentic Puerto Rican cuisine catering companies. Looking through restaurant menu’s I’m more than confident that we can make prices lower per person to cater for, versus the price per plate that the competition around us offering. The average price per plate based on 10 of the Mexican restaurants is about $12.83. Although there are Mexican restaurants I believe that we will have no competition, because we will be the first in business in the area for what we do. There …show more content…
Based off the census in 2007 the accommodation and food service sales was 7, 201 (Census 2012). The median household income from 2006-2010 was $48,771 (Census 2012). Based on the median household income, I see why it is very important to provided better prices for our catering company. There is only 2.3% of firms in the entire state of Pennsylvania that is owned by a Hispanic. Within the area, there isn’t a specific number of how many are Hispanic owned businesses, however on the census is says there are fewer than a 100, giving me the answer of just (F). I believe that even though odds might be against me based off of facts, I believe it’s all or more of the reason why I will excel. This is something different than this area has ever had. We will offer eat in meals as well, which will help much more. One of the biggest positives would have to be that Hellertown is located right off of a major east-west highway, I-78. There is tons of traffic that comes in and out of Hellertown. Hellertown has grown so much more because people commute everyday back and forth from PA to NJ or to NY. Because of the major highway one of the things I would do is advertise on

For our course project, my restaurant of choice was the Red Lobster located in downtown Silver Spring, Maryland. Red lobster is one of the world’s most famous casual/family seafood restaurants. It has been a staple of downtown Silver Spring’s eclectic dining community for more than 15 years. Interestingly enough, in all the years I’ve been dining at red lobster, I’ve never really given any consideration about what happens behind the scenes and the day-to-day operations. Luckily, after interviewing the manager, Harrison Shea, I’ve a better appreciation for just how challenging working in the restaurant industry can be.…

Susanne, I enjoyed reading your week 3 discussion forum post regarding your concept of Susanne’s Bakery and Café and exactly who will be your target market. I have to say, I find the aspect of your concept that caters to the special dietary needs of the consumers with celiac disease, gluten allergies, diabetes, and those seeking organic options is extremely necessary. I am not personally that type of consumer, however I have friends and family member who have a truly hard time dining out. For example, my sister-in-law ordered a gluten-free entrée from a restaurant and not more than an hour later had broken out in a rash, because of what I assume was cross contamination at a restaurant that does not normally cater to special dietary needs…
