Capstone Course Reflection

Decent Essays
My experience as a writer or communicator would have been considered well below average if I was asked just a few years ago, however, I feel that during my time at Robert Morris this has improved. From this class specifically, I wish to gain an understanding of communication outside of college academics. In my Capstone course, the teacher did not want anything aside from the citations written in APA or MLA. He felt that if this was not known by now it would not be learned and furthermore, he felt it had no standing outside of academics. I have spent the past fifteen years in the military and communication in the military is vastly different than that of the civilian world. For this reason, I believe that my communication skills need to be brought

Coming into English 101, I really did not know what to expect. This was my first college writing class so I had no idea what it was going to be like. In high school I would have considered myself to be a decent writer, not the best or not the worst. I would never impress anyone with my writing skills but I could still come across as educated on my topic.…

As I came to college, my family and I anticipated I would be following a simple mold of a conscientious student. One that is highly focused in some limited number of long term goals. Don 't get me wrong, this only meant that I had high expectations out of my college education. For some people, this path leads them to great success. But, I slowly realized my vision of success needed to have stories from different roads and bridges, than just one simple path.…

Title Enrolling the EOF program has lighten up a path in life that would have gone completely undiscovered had I walked alone. Along the path was my introduction to college writing, a class that has improved my writing skills profoundly. At first the tasks given to us on the syllabus seemed daunting, almost insurmountable within the five-week period of the program; it seemed even more inconceivable with the class being only twice a week. However, with the guidance and instruction given to me by the professor and peers I was able to strengthen my work as a student.…

The first few weeks of the semester really made me realize how terrible of a communicator, I am; in a communication class perspective. Throughout my week, I would write in my Interpersonal Communication Journal about all of the different types of conversations I came across. Not one conversation was the same. They were all about different topics. Each journal entry I would write, however, had all different aspects to them.…

English 219 was my first college level English course, and through attending and completing all of the assignments I have learned many skills that I believe will greatly help me in my future courses in college. Next semester I am enrolled in English 220, and after having taken this course I feel substantially better about continuing on with English courses at a college level. It has helped me to become more confident in my writing skills and provided me with an excellent basis for me to continue on with next semester, and throughout the rest of my schooling experience. Throughout this class I have learned many things, but perhaps the most important is the steps to writing an essay, and the planning options.…

Written language is a trait known to be only possessed by mankind. Although other species may have audible forms of communication, man is able to record and document his thoughts, feelings, or events that have unfolded in a way that can be viewed multiple times without him having to use his voice over and over. Literacy is a skill that adults in the United States are expected to have; but the level of your literacy says a lot about you and can have a tremendous impact on what career you end up in. For this reason, this college English class is a requirement for all those seeking a degree. Not only did I learn how to think of subjects and topics more objectively, but I learned a multitude of different modes and strategies I can employ in my writing.…

Mid Semester Reflection As i have gotten to know the students at Hillside Junior High School in their math and reading class, i have really started to see the differences in all the students and see the group of students outside of the realm of just students to really identifying them as individuals. It's not that i was going into the classroom expecting to see a particular group or with a particular idea but it's more that i have been able to see how well you get to know students when you spend so much time with them. To be able to expand your understanding more from just the overwhelming idea of students to knowing individual students outside of that huge group.…

When I delivered the teaching session, the experience was an overall success with students showing a clear interest and engaging in the lesson (Table 1, question 10, mean 4.3). The teaching began with a clear introduction to the key learning points for the whole session (Table 1, question 5, mean 4.3), which allowed the students to understand what the session was going to entail. This was beneficial to those who needed to see the big picture to see how topics fit together[1]. I further explained that the session will be split into three sections and explained that certain learning outcomes will be covered in each section. Student feedback stated that there was “enthusiastic teaching in appropriate sized teaching bites.”…

Over the course of this semester, I took a lot away from this Introduction to Technology for Educators course that I believe really helped me grow as a future educator. I was introduced to many different types of software and apps and taught how I could introduce technology in the classroom and make it effective. Even through how we created our assignments were different applications that I believe I will use in my classroom. This course has really opened my eyes to how teachings can stray away from traditional methods and how it ends up really working in the classroom. I learned how we can take all these different types of technologies and form them to adapt to whatever we are teaching and how we want them to be used.…

Written Reflection for Teaching in the Middle School Classroom Summary of the Articles The three required journals for this class all addressed discipline and success in middle school. Most of the concepts included in each article overlapped and complemented each other well, however, they each delved into their own information. Teaching Disaffected Middle School Students: How Dynamics Shape Student’s Experiences, seemed slightly less researched, but still included a lot of quality information. This article focused on Community Day Schools, schools for students who had been expelled from their schools, and on the three different types of teachers that taught there.…

While reflecting on my time at Tomahawk Intermediate School I believe the most rewarding aspect of my Student Teaching experience was getting to know my students and watching them grow. For example; Focus Student A started off the school year very unsure of herself unwilling to stand up for herself in group discussions even if she was correct. Through positive reinforcement in small group and one on one she has become more comfortable with her classmates and more confident in her own abilities. For this reason, she is now willing to speak up in small group discussions and whole class discussions.…
