CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION

1.1. Introduction
Caprolactam (CPL) is an organic compound with the formula (CH2)5C(O)NH. This colourless solid is a lactam or a cyclic amide of caproic acid. Caprolactam was first described in the late 1800s by Gabriel and Mass, when it was prepared by the cyclization of ε-aminocaproic acid, the product of the hydrolysis of caprolactam.

In the months after Schlack’s discovery the first stocking were produced from Perlon. All the Perlon produced went to the war effort. While nylon 66 had gained a prior footing in the U.S. and in countries with Dupont licensees, nylon 6 had the prior foothold in Germany. Japan’s industry was established on a caprolactam base. In both Germany and Japan, nylon 66 has found its place next to the established

The one located at 1730.1 cm was the result of a carbonyl group and -1 the peak at 1617.7 cm-1 specified the existence of a benzene ring. Another peak at 1151.5 cm-1 indicates a C—O bond, which is presented in methyl m-nitrobenzoate. The peak at 739.9 cm indicated that the product was meta-substituted benzene. All of the shown -1 peaks supported that the product was methyl m-nitrobenzoate. Using 1H NMR the meta-substituted product can identity and differentiated from para- and ortho- substitution.…

Initially, the following monomers namely, aniline, anthranilic acid, and crystalline o-phenylenediamine were utilized by 2:2:1 mass ratios. Therefore, 1.82 ml, 20 mmol of pure aniline; 2.74 g, 20 mmol of pure anthranilic acid; 1.08 g, 10 mmol of crystalline o-phenylenediamine were dissolved in 7.5 mL of conc. HCl at room temperature under vigorous magnetic stirrer. Subsequently, 60 mL of potassium dichromate initiator was dissolved in distilled water (K2Cr2O7 8.8 g / 250 mL of distilled water) was gradually added into the reaction solution with continuous stirring at room temperature. The ter-polymerization solution was left for 24 hr at room temperature to complete the polycondensation reaction.…
