Since the early 19th century when this section of land was used by settlers as a market place for manufacture and hay, hence its name, “Haymarket”. The building initially functioned as “Belmore Markets” as a place for fruit and vegetables, which relocated in 1912. In 1916, after the relocation of Belmore Markets, Wirth Bros took over and opened their new Wirth Bros Hippodrome, which included various attractions such as: circus acts, theatre and vaudeville shows. Although, the performances were successful, the Hippodrome eventually failed financially and The Capitol Theatre was opened in 1928.
