I thought I was firm on my views on capital punishment until we recently covered the topic in class. When asked to write down my original thoughts on capital punishment, I wrote: I am against the death penalty. I’m against it partly because of my religious upbringing, that condones capital punishment, and partly because I think there’s a possibility someone can be executed when innocent. I don’t really know what the death penalty is about today.…
This play was a fine way to show how justice system was unfair and the terrible events that happened in Salem. I am going to talk about some of differences from then and today. How people was treated was inhumane. This was a terrible time in which the justice system failed to help those who needed it most.…
Crucible writing assignment Most people desire to be treated with fairness and equality. While justice is meant to be distributed with fairness and equality, Arthur Miller’s play, The Crucible portrays that this is not always the case. Those appointed to administer justice often misuse their power in order to get revenge on those they feel deserved it. Revenge manipulated the system of justice by twisting information to gain what it desires.…
The Crucible- who’s the blame The Crucible, by Arthur Miller was a play that dealt with many false trials in Salem, Massachusetts that condemned many innocent beings to death, leading the country to its first severe trial. These trails are performed to drive Satan out of Salem so that Satan could not corrupt more of God’s children . Arthur Miller created this play to show how similar it was to the Red Scare. During the 1950’s the government tried to drive out communist in our country, just like in the play where the higher government tried to rule out the Salem witches. In Arthur Miller’s play, The Crucible, Miller demonstrated that it was John Proctor’s flaw, lust and pride that led him to be most responsible for the tragedies that happened…
In the novel The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, takes place in Salem, Massachusetts where many characters are taking advantage of the corrupted justice system to create false accusations on people they had grudges on. These corrupted people are using the justice system where people will be incarcerated if they accepted to being a witch or they “[promised] hangin’ if they’ll not confess” even if they are telling the truth (Act I). At the begging of the book Proctor and Abagail are introduced to being in an affair, thus Abigail accuses Proctors wife, Elizabeth, to take her place. Acknowledging this, the accusation is obviously a fraud causing Elizabeth to choose between saying that she is not a witch, the truth, just to get hanged, or to be put…
In the past during the Salem witch trials, you were isolated and tormented for being a “witch”. Now in today's society it's the exact same for the lgbt community. “Early polling data related to same-sex relationships demonstrated that most Americans were not supportive of LGBT relationships with seventy percent reporting in 1974 that they thought sexual relations between same-sex people was always wrong”(Sobel). Back then no one liked the idea of homosexuality, and people who were gay couldn't come out because of it. Our modern day society can be connected to the unfair justices in The Crucible.…
You cannot hide another’s blood underneath white gloves. In The Crucible the Salem witchcraft trials are shown for what they are, not a gallant war on witchcraft but rather people instilling fear for personal profit. The Crucible shows how Salem is torn apart by girls practicing witchcraft in the forest being blown out of proportion. Three characters within the play are driven to accuse for personal gain, Abigail, Thomas Putnam, and Reverend Parris. They murder their neighbours cowering under the principle of witchery.…
Imagine being killed for a crime you did not commit. Unjust people out of fear, shame, or pride will perpetuate and defend their mistakes. The Crucible written by Arthur Miller takes place during the Salem Witch Trials. Abigail Williams, a very naughty teen, is caught with her friends dancing naked in the woods during the nighttime. These acts are considered signs of witchcraft.…
Having had grown up in a household with two sisters each being being two years apart i know what it is like to lie in order to avoid being punished. Growing up my sisters and I would always blame each other to prevent punishment. My mom would eventually grow tired of trying to figure out which of us three actually did it and either be left off the hook or be punished equally. When my sisters would get in trouble for something i did i would feel guilty and was obliged to try and make it up to them by letting them use one of my toys or confessing to my mom.…
They will grow up in a world free of the name of witch in their family. Within this play, truth is a constant struggle. If truth had prevailed, the consequences would be been much better. All that needed to happen was for the girls to admit they had danced in the woods and taken a whipping; people would have lived and Salem would be a much better place. Proctor’s choice to tell the truth led to his death.…
Death is almost always perceived in such a pessimistic manner because some people believe life has much more opportunity to be content. This type of belief is shown in The Crucible through Reverent Hale’s eyes when he desperately attempts to convince Elizabeth Proctor to tell her husband to choose life over a death sentence of lechery, stating that “life is God’s most precious gift; no principle, however glorious, may justify the taking of it” (Miller 122). While this statement may be true when talking about a person living in a more accepting society, the characters in The Crucible unfortunately live in a society where people mostly care about their devotion to God, and in the meantime, live off their neighbors’ drama just to criticize their…
Arthur Miller’s play, The Crucible, is based on the 1692 Salem witch trials and explores the changing power relationships between the characters. To a certain extent, the play explores the idea of characters who were previously powerless, becoming empowered as a result of the trials, however, two more prevalent themes associated with this power related theme were characters losing and abusing power. Abigail and the other young girls who she drags into her story are temporarily empowered throughout the duration of the trials. The idea of loss of power, however, is carried out to a greater degree through the characters of Mr Proctor and others who were accused of witchcraft. Along with this gain in power and loss of power, abuse of power is explored…
Justice is the act of fairness and reasonability. In a court, it is the basis of all trials and determines a defendant’s end result. If justice is not carried out, it can cause an innocent person to be prosecuted. The Constitution is what dictates the fairness, claiming that all men have given rights at birth. It gives freedoms of speech and petition, protection against self-incrimination, cruel and unusual punishments, and establishes the idea of innocent until proven guilty.…
Thomas Kim #3 Ms. Lin English Honors 10A November 5, 2015 Reverend Hale and Justice If a distorted justice seeks to exist and to disappear in a society, then there must be those who support and oppose it. In Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, Reverend Hale played a key role in both the affirmative and the dissenting sides of the trials by promoting the existing theocratic justice, doubting it later on, and opposing it in the end, which sends a signal to everyone that the theocratic justice is not absolute and completely justified. At first, Hale initiates the witch trials by explicitly supporting the laws and the court. However, as the court’s absurdity increases with its attempt to maintain its reputation by condemning innocents to their ruins,…
