Before an individual is healed from a disease or sickness, doctors must first target the root of the cause. Once that is resolved, the doctors are able to cure the source from the sick patient, which would benefit the survivors of sickness to perform his or her daily lives as healthy and without worry anymore. Capital punishment works in the same way. Until the government allows for the death penalty, innocent lives (the sick) are not able to fully live freely because the criminals (the disease) are still existent in their lives (the body). Criminals are slowly accustomed to the small opportunities that prisons offer. A well-known short story written in 1904 called The Cop and the Anthem supports this claim. In this story, Soapy, a homeless man from New York City, purposefully commits crimes in order to get arrested and spend winter in prison knowing that being in prison provides adequate food and shelter (O Henry). Although the focus of this story shows his fail attempts to get arrested, the mindset behind his actions represent how people do not take prisons as too big of a punishment. In the process of a death penalty the respondent would have the right to two attorneys, court cost, petition, appeals, etc., which would add up. The 2006 study show that adding up the costs would be around or even more than $1,028,700 than doing a non-death penalty case (“What Costs More the Death Penalty or Life in Prison”). Looking at only the numbers, it sounds more reasonable and affordable to contribute to the alternates of death penalties. Although there are other options rather than the death penalty including life imprisonment, it is important to factor in the cost-benefit analysis. When a criminal is sentenced to death, it not only puts an end to creating more chaos in society, but also saves the lives of the innocent. It may not seem like the ideal option if only taking into money for account, but the end results would to be in favor of this penalty would be more beneficial in the long run. If the government used the money they saved from abolishing the death penalty and invested it on criminals who are sentenced to life imprisonment, it would still put society at risk to live in fear and worry.
