I have chosen to review capital punishment and its effects on crimes committed as well as the support for or against capital punishment. Capital punishment is also considered the death penalty or execution which is punishment by death. The sentence for capital punishment is referred to as a death sentence. Crimes that can result in a death penalty are known as capital crimes or capital offences. In the past capital punishment has been practiced by most societies. It is a form of punishment for criminals, and political or religious dissidents. Historically the death sentence was carried out in public and consisted of torture and execution. Today roughly 36 countries actively practice capital punishment and roughly 103 countries have completely abolished it. Some other countries have abolished capital punishment for ordinary crimes only while maintaining it for special circumstances such as war crimes. Capital punishment is a matter of active controversy in various countries and states. Individual positions on capital punishment can vary within a single political ideology or cultural region. Although many nations have abolished capital punishment, over 60% of the world 's population live in countries where executions still take place, such as China, India, the United States and Indonesia.
