Capillary Breach

A water table marks the top of the saturated zone of groundwater. When something is saturated, it means one substance (Like soil) is filled with another substance (Like water). Therefore, the area filled with water is called the saturated zone. This zone can be called the phreatic zone or the zone of saturation. This is always the zone below the water table. Directly above a water table there is always a capillary fringe. The water table separates the capillary fringe from the zone of saturation. This is demonstrated in Figure I. A capillary fringe can have many different heights. Capillary action is when groundwater is pulled up and starts to fill the pores at the base of the vadose zone. (The base of the vadose zone is the capillary fringe,

Remediation: The mudboils in Tully Valley are caused by artesian pressure. To reduce mudboil sediment discharges from the mudboil depression area to Onondaga Creek, remedial measures were implemented. This includes installing depressurizing wells along Onondaga Creek and around the mudboil depression area to decrease the artesian pressure. Since the majority of mudboils in Tully Valley are located near the Onondaga Creek mudboil passageway and mudboil tributary diversion channel, the majority of the depressurizing wells is placed near those locations as a result.…

My goals under Oregon’s REU opportunity are, to improve my understand of sedimentary processes and water dynamics with hopes for applying this research to my future goals of researching water contamination processes. I want to work with Alan Mix’s research opportunity of looking into the accumulations of river discharge from flooding, and learn how to interpret the floods impact on the forams with a forensic like mind set. Researching forams through an altered sea floor and related this to past flooding would further our understanding between the relationships of floods with sedimentation supply rates and the available accumulation. Because I want to go into contamination, researching past flooding and its impact of the sea floor accumulation would give vital information into how to interpret and go about researching contamination’s affects…

There are two main viewpoints on any environmental issue, the modernist perspective and the neo-traditionalist perspective. The two perspectives greatly contrast each other, as they take completely opposite sides of the argument in any environmental issue. This was represented in the lecture by Professor Mark Boyer about Considering Environmental Values. For the purpose of this essay, I will specifically be talking about the issue of Climate change, and how both perspectives view this environmental issue. The modernist perspective consists of the optimists, they conclude that our continuous technological advancement is key to future success and will bring about solutions to any problems.…

The purpose of the osmosis experiment was to observe the diffusion of solutes and the osmosis of water through a semipermeable membrane, which was dialysis tubing. This experiment was done to examine, if the solution is hypertonic, hypotonic or isotonic.…
