The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse has a significant amount of history behind it. The current standing lighthouse in Hatteras Island, North Carolina is actually the second Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. The original octagonal lighthouse, built in 1794, stood around 90 feet tall. Its short height made it difficult for sailors to use, causing 60 more feet to be added, making the lighthouse 150 feet tall. Although after destructive storms and desertion from the civil war the lighthouse had an extensive need for repairs. This lighthouse was built with sandstone that blended into the coast, so when it was rebuilt, the classic ‘candy cane’ black and white stripes were added. Finally in 1870, the lighthouse that we admire today was complete, stretching 193 feet
