Since the collapse of the Soviet Block, NGOs have become the western philanthropist’s favorite methods of charity (Edwards). This focus on organizations that were not tied to governments was due to a perceived ineptitude of legitimate regimes to provide necessary social welfare, be it domestically or abroad, leading many to think that these organizations could create a higher quality of service at a lower, and more privately subsidized cost (Zaidi). These different schools of thought are well illustrated within the three NGOs examined in this piece. W4 can be seen as giving too much power to the local perspective, allowing itself to be an organization which only gives money to local groups in the hope that they use it wisely, but lack any groundwork or incentives for the organizations to do so. WFW is the opposite end of the spectrum, while they have relationships with local leaders and organizations, they do not support them. They go in and train and support women themselves, using western tutors and foreign ideals to empower women. ActionAid is considered by many to be the ideal middle ground between the two. As they do give funds and support to local organizations they also go in and do groundwork themselves in order to subsidize the work being done by local organizations. With many NGOs like ActionAid already in the works, as well as many people who wish to help the world make a better place creating more and more every day. Many major problems are taking steps in being solved. With the combination in local and international perspectives NGOs are continuing to show why they are the main problem solvers in today’s international theater and why so many turn to them in their time of
