Much like the Joint Commission which grants accreditation to organizations that meet their standards pertaining to overall healthcare operations, the College of American Pathologists (CAP) is viewed by many as the gold standard for laboratory accreditation. This accreditation helps both United States laboratories as well as International laboratories ensure that they are meeting the most current standards in regards to laboratory testing of both human as well as animal specimens (“Laboratory Accreditation Program”, n.d.). While the CAP laboratory accreditation is specific to laboratories, its impact is often seen as systemic throughout the healthcare organizations that have achieved it.
