Maggie is a graphic designer who lives in Amsterdam and works for a design studio. She decided to move to Tokyo in a month. She searches information about Tokyo in general in her spare time lately, she opens japan-guide.com forums as usual at night after her work and gets to know about Canvas.

She visits the Canvas from forums and thinks it’s cool as it’s geolocated Tokyo creative community. She starts to try finding out how it works, and browses the landing page. From copies she understands that people can upload their works, and she understands from the quotes section that there are some users who got a job through Canvas. She also understands that Canvas is basically an invite only platform

But, the site shows her an alert message which says unless you fulfill every requirement you are not allowed to follow, like, and send a message. (You can upload later.) So, she uploads her thumbnail picture.

After she completes her profile, the site shows her her profile to make sure how it looks and then she clicks ‘ok’.

Then, the sites recommends her to choose a few things she’s interested in, so she can get related information. So, she chooses graphic design and illustrations. After that, the site takes her to Activity page. Next, she briefly browses Event page and browses Jobs page, but doesn’t find anything special. Now it’s time to sleep, so she closes her

She finds 4 more interesting print designers, so follows them and likes on some creations.

In a few days, she gets a notification from the app, which notify her about ‘Latest Creations’ (This is not just a random latest creation, but creation which has a given number of likes. let’s say 10 likes This is also based on her interest which she choosed onboarding), so she opens the app at the cafe during lunch time. She thinks that it’s cool, so she clicks like on them and follows some creatives.

One day, she browses Canvas with the app until she falls asleep. She finds a print designer who has really close sense to her, so she decides to send a message ‘Hi I’m Maggie, a designer currently based in Amsterdam and planning on moving to Japan in a few weeks. I love your creations and felt taste is closed to me. I was wondering if you know the bookstore where you can buy a nice art magazine? Many thanks. P.S. Please check out my works when you have spare time.

Paul Binnie, a newly popular woodblock print artist, challenges Japanese popular thought surrounding both gender stereotypes and negative connotations of the tattoo through his unique prints. His on-and-off approach highlights the ability of tattooing to individuate and deepen the perception of those who are brave enough to bear them. In a broader sense, Binnie is commenting on how all visual art can be used to disrupt and complicate dangerous limiting stereotypes and augment the identities of both artists and their patrons. Binnie’s choice to faithfully follow the Japanese woodblock printing method, besides lending credibility to him as a non-Japanese artist producing Japanese art, seems to have another deeper purpose. Woodblock printing,…
