Canterbury Tales's Speech Figurative Language

Canterbury's speech is intriguing in light of the fact that the Archbishop uses such striking imagery to prove the subservient relationship between the subjects and their ruler. Here, he makes an analogy between society and a settlement of honeybees. Like humans, honeybees have a ruler (in the Renaissance individuals thought that queen bees were male) and the rest of the hive works towards a common goal. As such, Canterbury is saying that the division of individuals into different classes is as natural as a hive of bees cooperating in

    1. (Gulliver critiquing his suit made by the Luputian tailor) “ He first took my altitude by a quadrant, and then, with a rule and compasses, described the dimensions and outlines of my whole body, all which he entered upon paper; and in six days brought my clothes very ill made, and quite out of shape, by happening to mistake a figure in the calculation. But my comfort was, that I observed such accidents very frequent, and little regarded. “ I think that this quote is important because it shows how even little ways of doing things are different between the two worlds. Gulliver, had he been making the suit, would have used a measuring tape like most would assume to do.…

Various groups of people have long believed something differentiates themselves from others. Most take this further, claiming that they surpass all other peoples. This scheme of thought dominated early America, and continued to provide a justification for ethnocentric attitudes through the mid 19th century. In turn, these beliefs justified discrimination against others in all facets of American society, leading the Anglo-Saxon majority to snub recent immigrants, and in its extreme, perpetuate the slave system. Yet, the cogent arguments for these beliefs remained slim.…

In the 16th century tragedy, Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare uses metaphor and diction, aimed at Tybalt and the 2 families, to reveal Mercutio’s own negative tone/attitude behind his outlook on those whom he had blamed for his death. For example, after Mercutio had been fatally struck from a sword blow by Tybalt in swords dual, Mercutio realizes he is going to die from being stabbed by Tybalt, and says “ I am peppered, I warrant, for this world. A plague o' both your houses! Zounds, a dog, a rat, a mouse, a cat to scratch a man to death! A braggart, a rogue, a villain that fights by the book of arithmetic!”…

I believe every good poem needs to have at least one example of figurative language to help the reader think and imagine the imagery. In Russell’s piece, similes are very much so present. In my opinion, he basically compared black to anything he could possibly think of that was dark. These associations are incredibly dark by comparing his television to death and hell (Lines 4 and 5). With these similes that Russell created, they really explain just how dark this outside atmosphere is due to the tornado; even though he was talking about how dark his television set went.…

“The Knight” by Adrienne Rich establishes the conflict between how we, as a society, view people externally versus how people view themselves internally. By using figurative language, including extended metaphor, imagery, and anaphora, Rich imposes the idea of how we shouldn’t expect people to be exactly how we see them. The entire poem is nothing more than an extended metaphor. An extended metaphor is a metaphor that is developed over the course of a body of text. In “The Knight” the speaker compares the knight to people who go through life trying to be brave when they are actually dead on the inside.…

Shakespeare 's works frequently employ similes and metaphors to enhance the complexity of his writing, as well as to invoke distinct images that are being described for his audience. In Twelfth Night, Shakespeare continues with this theme in describing the beauty of countess Olivia. Viola, acting as a messenger on behalf of Orsino, conveys to Olivia the degree to which she finds her beautiful through a metaphor: 'Tis beauty truly blent, whose red and white Nature 's own sweet and cunning hand laid on. Lady, you are the cruell 'st she alive If you will lead these graces to the grave And leave the world no copy.…

I have chosen Question One: Emile Bronte’s Wuthering Heights discuss how an attention to figurative language can help in an analysis of literary texts as I enjoyed reading the text and the many qualities that made it such an enjoyable read. When we read something we usually take it as it is but that is exactly what figurative language is not. When we read certain expressions or words with a different meaning it is known as figurative language which is different from literal interpretation. Figurative language goes beyond the meanings of the words that we read which give us, the readers a greater insight into the piece. There are many types of figurative language such as symbolism, metaphors and similes which are all seen in Emily Bronte's 'Wuthering…
