Canned Food Drive Analysis

Decent Essays
Essay one provided ways that I could teach my students how they can be proactive in their local communities. Once I read the essay about the canned food drive I had a different thought of canned food drives. Many school will hold a canned food drive and say they are giving to those in need, but I do not believe that they think about other needs that people living in poverty have. These people also need many daily essentials such as a toothbrush, soap, or even deodorant. This essay in my opinion gave so much insight on the underlying necessities that are needed by homeless people or people living in poverty. I feel that they students would change how they look at people that they see on the side of the road by completing this service learning

Journal 5 “I Just Want To Be Average” is the Essay I most identify with. Wanting to fit in and be part of a group. Also, how the school and school system can have a large influence on a student’s life. I seem to have the analogous issues with the classroom as Mike Rose does. How he had a hard time concentrating on and trying to enjoy the material being taught.…

Overall the essays that we have read this semester have been good. There are a few essays in particular that I think benefited me the most was “The Time to Act I Now” written by Al Gore, “Just Walk on By” written by Brent Staples, and the “Letter from Birmingham Jail” written by Martin Luther King. These essays have benefited me in a numerous amount of ways in which I am going to explain how their writing styles helped me become a better writer. Staples helped me a lot in which he taught me to explain my reasoning fully so that the audience know exactly what I am talking about. Another thing that Staples taught me was to explain the setting of the story in full detail so the readers can visualize what’s actually happening in the story this…

For me personal I would choose the essay because it delivers the author's message. The main message in this story is survival requires courage, strength, and cunning. This is a true story about what happened to Andrew Lam and his life in the refugee camps. In the essay Andrew says “When I was eleven, about your age, I too fled from my homeland with my mother and sister and grandmother when the communist tanks came rolling into Saigon, Vietnam. We ended up in a refugee camp in Guam.”…

Many forms of writing can have similarities in forms of tone or the format of how the essay is set up. Essays also can have many difference such as the type of words that are chosen or the overall purpose of what the essay is about. These similarities and differences can help the author establish their topic. In the essay" Sex, Drugs, Disasters, and the Extinction of Dinosaurs", Stephen Jay Gould uses many techniques to establish his point throughout his essay. Sharon Begley's" Designer Babies" also has techniques to make the essay clear of her view point.…

For my category four, I created a argumentative essay on the misuse of prescription drugs. I give examples in each paragraph and summed everything up. At first I wanted to have an essay talk about three bad effects of prescription drugs. Then I would break each paragraph down and make a category about each of the individual projects. Yet, I did have that goal in the end, but changed it a little bit.…

The Sanctuary of School The essay I chose to write was over the short article of “The Sanctuary of School” by Lynda Barry. In this story it talks about the author Lynda Barry’s experience with the school from a young age. She talks about growing up in a home with her mom and her dad having money issues, relatives that kept moving in, her brother and her sleeping on the couch, and the constant fighting going on. She explains how she didn’t feel safe at home so she talks about school being a safe haven for her, and how lucky she was that she had Mrs. LeSane and Mr. Gunderson.…

I really enjoyed some of the writing technique essays that we read in class. I usually spend several hours doing just my rough draft. For some reason, I had never considered just doing word throw up on my paper to help develop my ideas. The first draft shouldn’t be the final. My first draft was terrible, because I just wrote whatever came to my mind often not in complete sentences.…

Writing was not a subject that held my interest in high school. Throughout the last twelve years I have found myself having to write letters, proposals, and business correspondence for my employers. I would complete the assignment and move on to the next task. Deciding to further my education I enrolled in Daytona State College and my first class was your ENC 1101. I have seen a change in my pre-class writing style; I have honed my skills, and the different techniques I have learned while taking this course have only improved my writing style.…

As mentioned in the article posted by UM, faculty benefit personally and professionally from integrating service into their courses by encouraging interactive teaching methods, which add new insight to discussion in the classroom (Benefits of Service-Learning). By doing so, teachers are able to promote students to apply themselves more, and become more active learners. In my service learning, I was able to have that hands-on experience. This helped provide an opportunity for myself to become more creative and become an active learner. In some classes, applying myself to learn was difficult, but through service-learning assignments, I gained new knowledge.…
