In the story Of Mice and Men there was an old man named Candy, he is an old ranch hand or swamper. He kept everything nice and clean. The book used him to represent the relationship that Lennie and George had. They showed this by the relationship that Candy and his dog had, the dog depended on Candy but the dog gave candy hope. When they put Candy’s dog down it was almost like a part of Candy died. They used him as an example of what an old warn down man is like. Candy is just a little old man who has been all alone all of his life; he just wants some friends and a little bit of peace to end his years. They used him as an example of what happens to men when they are alone their whole life. I believe that all Candy needs in his life is a little excitement and hope. He always seems to be depressed and isn’t very outgoing. A reason is that he fears for his future on the ranch because he is old and only has one hand. One of the characters problems at the beginning of the story was his dog. Even though candy loved it the rest of the workers thought that the dog smelled and should be put down. The other workers thought that the dog was no good to itself or anyone else, but the dog meant a lot to candy. The dog gave candy a little piece of happiness and hope. The only thing that candy wanted was to be happy and be free. All he wanted was some piece and he thought that if he got the little house that he would be happy for once in his life. But at the end of the story the outcome of Lennie’s actions crushed Candy’s dream of ever having hope again. George would not buy the house without Lennie because Lennie was gorges
