Candidosis Essay

Improved Essays
Candidosis, Yeast Infection, Monilia and Thrush are all names used to describe one of the most debilitating immune deficiency and nutritional disorders of our time. The symptoms are numerous and include:
- Recurrent thrush or cystitis
- Chronic tiredness
- Inability to lose weight
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Allergies
- Uncontrollable mood swings
- Fluid retention
- Premenstrual syndrome
- Diarrhoea
- Constipation
- Chronic skin problems such as acne, dermatitis and tinea
All sufferers are also hypoglycaemic, which results in sugar cravings. These cravings can make the infection worse if acted upon as Candidosis feeds on sugar.
Severe infection can result in quite neurotic behaviour. Most Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME) sufferers have yeast infection, as do advanced AIDS

About 80% of these bacteria are considered ‘friendly’ with many of the variety Lactobacillus Acidophilus; the same as those that exist in live yoghurt. The remaining 20% are yeast organisms known as Candida Albicans. It is found deep within the bowel, generates food intolerances and supresses the immune system.
Yeast is a single cell organism related to moulds and fungi. It is neither animal of vegetable and lives all over the body on all of the mucous membranes which line the gastro intestinal tract. It is just especially prominent in the colon. It has a job to do, just like any other bacteria.
Its growth is normally kept in check by the friendly lacto bacteria in our gut and by a healthy immune system. When these regulating factors are disturbed, yeast (rather happily) multiplies.
This multiplication of yeast can be contributed to or encouraged by a number of things. These include:
- Stress, which supresses the immune system
- Lack of nutrients in our diet, which reduces the immune function
- Anything which imbalances the ‘friendly’ bacteria in our colon.

Lactococcus lactis is a microbe classified informally as a Lactic Acid Bacterium because it ferments milk sugar (lactose) to lactic acid. Lactococci are typically spherical or ovoid cells, about 1.2µm by 1.5µm, occurring in pairs and short chains. They are Gram-positive, non motile, and do not form spores. Lactococci are found associated with plant material, mainly grasses, from which they are easily inoculated into milk. Hence, they are found normally in milk and may be a natural cause of souring.…

Gram Negative Unknown Lab Report #20 BIOL 3444-008 Giang Nguyen TA: Malini Kotak 11/05/2014 Abstract The experiment is conducted in order to identify a randomly given unknown gram-negative microorganism. By comparative analysis of biochemical tests that were performed throughout the semester to find out its characteristics and determine the identification of bacterium out of four potential unknown was given. To figure out the characteristics, T-streak was performed to isolate the sample from broth to a Tryptic Soy Agar plate, along with an additional slant in case something wrong with the original plate that can possibly affect the result.…

A total of four microorganisms were isolated from the sample brought back from Mars. To identify the microorganisms which were isolated from the sample brought back from Mars, an rDNA sequence analysis was required. Every sequence had an S_ab score of 1.000 meaning the sequence is identical to the microorganism that it was matched to. Before gathering phenotypic results, we gathered phylogenetic data for the four microorganisms which includes Micrococcus luteus, Citrobacter freundii, Hafnia alvei, and Staphylococcus epidermidis. Micrococcus luteus is a gram positive, coccus shaped microorganism that is nonmotile and unable to grow on glucose minimal media or simmons citrate agar (Kocur, 1972;).…

Furthermore, Candide serves as a source of historical information in this class. I feel this book portrays one person’s view of historical content relevant to the period of the Enlightenment and Scientific Revolution. Even more, since Voltaire was born and lived during this period, I feel he could have used some of his personal experiences in this book. He could have incorporated what he saw and based some of the characters from the people he knew. I feel like this is a good source of historical information because it has allowed me to experience history in a new way.…

Mold is an unwanted and sometimes unwanted puzzle piece of this ecosystem called food, sometimes when food gets too old it begins to mold. Mold should be avoided being eaten as it may get you intoxicated and cause problems in your digestive system. It is also the same process that is made to use alcohol. This fungus can happen for a lot of reasons which are not known to us, this is why I will conduct this experiment. It helps to know what to avoid when storing food for extend periods of time.…

The intent of this experiment was to successfully transform synechocystis to a psbC lacking species through double homologous recombination. Subsequently we intended to retransform the mutated colonies back to the psbC carrying species after kanamycin selection. The initial knockout of the psbC gene ensured that photosystem II wouldn’t work and the colonies would rely on glucose as a source of sustainable nutrition. The sequential addition of kanamycin killed off the species that lacked the KanR gene that was replacing the psbC gene necessary for photosynthesis. Once we were content with the selection we were able to retransform the species back to the wild type carrying the psbC gene and reinstall the ability to use light as a source of energy.…

In Table 1 both fungal and bacterial colonies refer to the number of individual groups with distinct boundaries which match the assumed physical characteristic for each group. It is important to note the large increase in the number of fungal colonies as well as the decrease of bacterial colonies in the Mycophil plate both of which account for the discrepancy between the two percentages of fungal colonies present.…

The scientist’s want to see if certain sugars affect the amount of fermentation caused by yeast. The problem statement is; in which of these sugars, monosaccharides, disaccharides, or polysaccharides, will fermentation by yeast occur the best? The independent variable is the variables the scientists can control, so the scientists decided to use certain sugars, such as dextrose, maltose, and lactose being the IVs (Independent variables). The scientist’s Dependent Variable (DV) is the outcome of the experiment, in this case the dependent variable is the circumference of the balloon in centimeters. The scientists control would be the same balloons, same amount of sugar per gram, same amount of yeast per gram, same amount of time run for each…

It has been proven that yeast can grow on both YPD and SD plates. In this lab we cross several yeast strains through the process called replica plating. For this identification test only one dominant allele is required. One copy of each gene is essential to produce enough of each enzyme needed in order to make a histidine. Through the study of Saccharomyces cerevisiae we prove that by transferring yeast cells onto YPD and SD plates over a period of 24-72 hours in a thirty degrees Celsius incubator, in return will grow yeast.…
