We are all born without knowing what is good or what is bad in this world. When time passes, as we grow up, we start to face reality and get more mature. In other words, we can say that we gain insight as we grow up and start to realize that the world is not as perfect as we thought when we were little kids. Similarly, Candide, who lived in a castle and who had been educated under optimist philosopher Pangloss, believed that everything in this world was for the best. However, as time passed, Candide started to face the harsh times of life and gains insight after all the journeys he had been through.

He did not know whose view of life was really true; therefore, in my opinion, all those people who met and shared their life experiences with Candide, helped him to gain insight by expanding his knowledge about life. Candide`s thoughts of life were very simple where he did not know anything about bad or evil side of life. After his journeys, where he faced much difficult times and where he heard many different perspectives about life from each individual he met, Candide`s view of life became more realistic. Realistic means finding out that the life consists of both good and evil things and it is better to live a life as it is without thinking what is good and what is evil. One of my classmates, Gabriel N. Skolnick, mentioned in his presentation that there is no right or wrong way to live, thus we should live a life as it is without considering on bad or evil side of life. As a result, Candide at the end of the story says, “We must cultivate our garden” (Ch.30, p.413) instead of seeking for a true view of
