Candidate Herren Case Study

Candidate Herren demonstrated confidence in his order and the ability to receive information, process it, and communicate it to his team. He maintained this demeanor throughout the execution, showing confidence in his own plan and composure under constrained time. SNC briefed complete paragraphs one and two, but Execution was not ordered correctly. Tasks and scheme of maneuver were explicit and clear, but were briefed at the end of the order. As a team leader, SNC was effective in maintaining the tempo of his team, quickly re-attacking the problem during small setbacks; i.e. another candidate falling in or the raft coming apart. SNC was able to make adjustments to the plan and adapt their scheme of maneuver based on some of the suggestions

Candidate Bills delivered a very thorough and in depth five paragraph order. SNC was very diligent in ensuring that all information and additional information was passed to the fire team, at one point causing SNC to stumble over his thought process, and pause for a length of time to recoup his thoughts before moving on. This visibly flustered SNC. SNC lacked a sense of urgency by taking up a substantial amount of time to deliver the order. Upon completing the brief SNC took more time to square himself away failing to give any guidance to the fire team resulting in zero productivity.…

The information Candidate Jennings briefed in his five paragraph order was sufficient, it flowed well, and sounded well thought out. However, Candidate Jennings very rarely made eye contact with his fire team as he briefed the order as if hiding behind his notes. Candidate Jennings briefed the incorrect grid for the "current location" of the fire team, even after asking the instructor to repeat the grid on more than one occasion to confirm their "current location". Once the order was given to move to the objective Candidate Jennings made good use of verbal and non-verbal commands to control his fire team, as displayed by seamless transitions as they shifted formations on the go.…

For these elements to work, each member of a team must depend on each other’s contribution, but not rely on one member to do all the work. As well, an intentional goal must be set for all members to unify the same mentality. In my own experience with the Buckeye Twirl baton team, we fail to perform as a team and work as individuals.…
