The Nova episode, “Cancer Warrior” follows the cancer Research of Dr. Judah Folkman, and his lab’s crowning achievement, defining the role of angiogenesis in tumors. Over the years that Dr. Folkman’s lab worked on the angiogenesis project they made many breakthroughs, albeit over a long period of time. Dr. Folkman was the son of an Ohio Rabbi, but instead of going into the family business he chose to practice medicine. After graduating from medical school Dr. Folkman was drafted into the United States Navy where he started his career in research. This first project was a study to see if hemoglobin could be dehydrated and then reconstituted to combat the short shelf life of blood.
